Before The Armory Show became one of New York’s biggest annual art fairs, it was held in a hotel room, an actual armory, and began as an exhibition that scandalized New York.

1913: THE ORIGINAL ARMORY SHOW

Officially called the International Exhibition of Modern Art, the original Armory Show opened at New York’s 69th Regiment Armory on February 17, 1913.

Organized by the Association of American Painters and Sculptors, it brought approximately 1,250 works together and introduced a broad American audience to some of Europe’s most radical modern art.

Marcel Duchamp’s Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2 became one of the exhibition’s most notorious works, while Cubism, Fauvism and other new European movements challenged American ideas of what art could look like.

1963: THE SHOW RETURNS… 50 Years Later

There was actually no continuously operating Armory Show between 1913 and 1994, but for the 50th anniversary of the landmark 1913 exhibition, the Armory Show was recreated, bringing together more than 300 works from the original show.

The exhibition was organized by the Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute and sponsored by Henry Street Settlement

It was held in the same Armory on 69th street, redesigned to evoke the appearance of the original exhibition.

1994: THE GRAMERCY HOTEL

More than 80 years later, dealers Colin de Land, Pat Hearn, Matthew Marks and Paul Morris launched the Gramercy International Art Fair at the Gramercy Park Hotel. Rather than conventional booths, galleries rented hotel rooms and showed art on beds, walls and inside closets.

It was intimate, experimental and downtown.

Tracey Emin famously appeared in bed with her early quilt (pictured here).

RIP to The Gramercy Hotel…

1999–2020: “THE ARMORY SHOW”

The fair officially named itself what it is known as today, and physically moved to Chelsea Piers. Spanning Pier 92 and 94, the fair presented separate installations of modern and contemporary art.

Over these years, the fair also developed commissioned artist projects, including work by John Waters and Theaster Gates.

Do we miss the piers? Feels nostalgic in a weir taken in New York, New York by @salon.21

Recently visited a townhouse for sale in need of staging help and couldn’t help myself by reimagining what the space would look like with ORIGINAL artwork.

Here are some afters and befores… I truly think art makes a home and these mass produced artworks just weren’t selling it for me!

Millions of dollars shouldn’t look cheap.

Vase by @sashacourtstudio and @calicowallpaper

At least put a vase and branches in the alcove?

Artwork by Danielle Kosann - so joyful!
Bar also needs desperate restaging - and no more lucite legs please…

Please stop using gold leaf from the craft store.

Feminine but sophisticated. Just get rid of faux fur blanket.

Me wondering what this “sculpture” is and who made this decision..

This wallpaper still needs to go but these works by Therese Mulgrew make me want to dine here.

…

Room was in desperate need of a POP, an accent color. So much white cream pink

See??

Need to add lighting and a runner but it’s a start!
