On this Salty Monday we want to remind you ambition isn’t something to apologize for. In one 2024 survey, 65% of workers expected a raise in the next year... so wanting more is the norm, not the exception. When was the last time you asked for it? It costs nothing, and most of us leave it unused. About half of Gen Z workers (50%) said they’d asked for a raise in that same survey. Using your voice is a muscle... where could you start flexing yours? Your manager can’t advocate for wins they can’t see. Keep a running note of what you’ve delivered, so you’re never starting from scratch when it’s time to ask. In this survey, most people who asked got a yes. The “no” you’re bracing for may be less likely than the “yes” you’re not asking for. It’s one self-reported survey, but it’s worth sitting with... what would you ask for if you knew the odds were this good? Raises often happen right where you already work. Among raise recipients in the survey, 47% reported an internal promotion, while only 13% got theirs by changing companies. Sometimes the best move is a better conversation with the people already in the room. Bring numbers, not comparisons. Check job postings that list pay ranges and industry salary data before you go in. And you may not need a huge ask: 51% of raises in the survey were under $5,000. Why do fewer women ask? In this survey, 49% of men asked for a raise and only 35% of women did. But the reported rates of actually receiving one were much closer: 67% for men and 63% for women. The gap in asking is bigger than the gap in getting... so what’s holding the ask back? Tell us in the comments. Research is only useful if you can turn it into words. Salty Advice is where we do exactly that... real scripts, real facts, no fluff. Click the link in our profile to sign up for our newsletter and stay up to date with the Salty Effect. Sometimes the hardest part of speaking up isn’t the conversation... it’s the rule running quietly in the background. Research on workplace silence found that people often hold back even helpful ideas because of taken-for-granted beliefs about when speaking up is risky. “Don’t embarrass the boss in public.” “This could hurt my career.” Most of us never chose those rules... we just absorbed them. The good news? Confidence isn’t one fixed trait. It’s dynamic, it’s social, and it can be built. Start here: name the belief. Check it against what has actually happened. Start small and private. Bring a problem and an idea. Your best ideas might already be in the room... they’re just not being said. Balanced processing isn’t a personality trait. It’s a leadership practice, actively seeking out the perspectives that challenge your own, before you decide. And it goes both ways. Leaders invite it. Teams have to trust it enough to use it. That’s where real connectedness starts. Salty Advice drops every Tuesday... research-backed, no fluff, just what it actually takes to lead and be led well. Welcome to SALT Consultants. Authentic leaders. Empowered people. For years I’ve sat with one question, first as research, now as a mission: what if the most powerful thing about you as a leader is already there? Not something you need to become… something you need to uncover. The SALT Method is how we get there: Self-Awareness, Relational Transparency, Balanced Processing, and Internalized Moral Perspective. Four behaviors, one goal. Leaders who lead from truth, and teams who feel it. Just like salt… we don’t change what’s there. We elevate it. Follow @salt.consultants. We’re just getting started. by @salt.consultants
