You’ve had our guides. Now it’s your turn. Welcome to a new series where others take over our guides and tell us about places that shape their work and their days.

First up, Hastings musician, storyteller and theatre maker Bev Lee Harling @bevleeharling.

Her new show, live this weekend, Things I Know and Things I Don’t, grew out of her dad’s daily walks in Hastings Country Park, his dementia, and the Hank Williams songs he never forgot. Swipe for the five places that inspire her writing, from the fishing boats on the Stade to the hot stones on the beach.

Hastings, it’s bonfire week 🔥

On Saturday the torchlit procession winds through town, the bonfire goes up on the beach at Pelham Place and the fireworks follow. Follow @hastings_bonfire for safety info and any changes on the night.

In this week’s newsletter we’ve rounded up pit stops along the route for sausage rolls, hot chocolate and mulled wine, plus afterparties for when it’s all burnt down. Eating in first? @vinniespizzaco is delivering from 3pm on Saturday.

Elsewhere this week: unseen Bowie photos at @lucybellgallery, a £100 conker championship at The Albion, pumpkins and piglets at Tibbs Farm, and a body in a village pond in Battle that needs solving over supper.

Before pumpkins and fancy dress, there was Samhain.

The ancient Celtic festival marked the end of harvest and the start of winter, a time when the line between this world and the next was said to wear thin. Sussex has its own folklore too. The old Sussex word for fairies was ‘Pharisees’, little beings said to dance in fairy rings, the circles of mushrooms that pop up every autumn.

That side of Sussex is still very much alive. From a Samhain ritual and witch marks to a werewolf party, a coffin parade and Transylvanian wine, here are 10 things to do in and around Hastings this Halloween.

Save this for the 31st 🎃

Keep an eye out for our half term guide and Halloween party guide, both coming soon 👀
