A field guide to tomatoes- high summer in the south.

Some notes on a few of the varieties I planted this year. Abundance.

I spotted a few horn worms on one plant. They were small. As president of the worm haters club, I had my husband remove them. I will admit, they were a little cute.

Leaf footed bugs have started to camp on my cherry vine arch. I feel outnumbered and get chicken pimples when I try to scatter them.

As the fruits ripen, I’m excited to start the season of canning and preserving. 🫙🍅

What’s your favorite variety to grow?

Onion harvest and a deceased bumblebee.
The onion bulbs are small but they have a satisfying tug. Found this fallen soldier in the driveway. I put him in a jar with the caterpillar from last fall.
Collecting life and death.

Bean and tomato arch at blue hour.

And then: May. June. July. Progress.

The arch has gotten shaggy and we’ve planted round two of beans. The mosquitos make it difficult to enjoy the fairy lights. Little fingernail crosses all over my legs.

Point of view: you’re an indecisive bumblebee exploring my garden.

A little trendy but hey, I’m not above trying new things. 🐝

The sunflower’s life, as I have observed.

We don’t harvest the seeds. We use them to prolong the seasonal show of bees and birds.

What crops do you leave as offering?

Small spring harvest and garden projects.
From seed to flower.

The Borage’s reproductive organs are stunningly sweet! I popped off each calyx and made ice cubes with the flowers. I left plenty for the pollinators. 🐝
The calendula petals are still drying. Their future is undetermined. Maybe it will become a lovely garnishing sugar. Maybe a tea or tincture if I gather and dry more.

What garden projects are you doing?

Rain is coming. I brought these ladies in to savor some sunshine, and because the sky would have stolen them soon. Regardless of its destructive nature, I do prefer the rain. I can appreciate a sunny day- gingham spread on the ground, the creaking of swings, heat blushed shoulders- but the grounding nostalgia of dark gray air is a sister.

Spring blossoms in the garden, at an intimate distance.

The nasturtium picture was an accident. It’s the best of the bunch, I think. I love the nasturtium. The flowers are popping up, in varied shades of deep sunshine. They pack a delicious punch too.

Have you tried it?
