Just published and exclusive to Salts – ā€˜Take A Walk on the Mild Side’, the new book by Ian Beesley and Ian McMillan.
The two Ians - great friends, great artistic collaborators and great drinking pals - have created a love letter to the urban pub with this volume of post-industrial walks to public houses in the North of England. Part photography book, part poetry book, part hiker’s guide, it’s very special.
Hand- drawn maps and photography by Beesley and new poems by McMillan come together to create a celebration of local landscapes and local drinking houses. As Beesley says, ā€œthe pub walks we hear about tend to be really bucolic - there’s always fields, there’s always sheep. I love walking through the countryside as much as everyone else, but I also cherish cement, graffiti, street lighting - all beautiful and human to me, and with a good beer in an interesting pub at the end….or even, sometimes, a beer stop at the halfway point as well!’
Take a Walk on the Mild Side is available in the bookshop on the 2nd floor and online at saltsmillshop.co.uk. The book has its own companion beer, Sup Up and Away Brew No.2, produced by Amity Brew Co in Greengates and available in Salts Diner and Café in to the Opera. Images from the book are included in Ian Beesley’s latest additions to his Salts Mill exhibition Life Goes On in Gallery 2, open Wednesday – Sunday 10am-5pm, admission free. by @saltsmillofficial

We have some fabulous Saul Bass posters available online and we're really enjoying seeing his game-changing graphic design work up close.
Bass was born on the 8th Mary 1920 in the Bronx, New York, United States. In his early twenties he studied at the Art Students League in Manhattan and attended night classes with Hungarian artist and theorist György Kepes at Brooklyn College. Bass first began designing print ads in Hollywood in the 1940’s before producing his first film poster and title sequence in 1954 for the film ā€˜Carmen Jones’. Bass became widely known in the film industry for his striking title sequences and stunning poster designs. by @saltsmillofficial
