Actually an older photos I found, but very memorable because this barracuda had a teeny-tiny fish friend hanging out by its dorsal fin (if you look really closely you might see it). I’m not sure the barracuda knew that he had a follower, but this little fish was definitely sticking close to it.

Little friends: a Hawaiian Cleaner Wrasse and Blackfin Chromis. While I love watching cleaner wrasse at work, I also love watching the Chromis as they move in a cloud-like dance above the reef, rising and falling as they forage on plankton.

Do you see it?
Leaf Scorpionfish are masters of camouflage, they can be a variety of different colors and often have algae growing on them. They shed their skins quite often, doing so they can change color and not get too overgrown by the algae.

To everyone out there who loves nature- whose heart is captured by nudibranchs or birds or sharks, who cares about the wellbeing and conservation of these species and places: thank you. You give me hope. You lighten the weight of caring about so many precious lives. You bring so much beauty to a world that has disassociated itself from nature, that has forgotten to coexist alongside those who share this earth with us. Coffee then diving or diving then coffee?
(Personally, I do coffee before and after. I didn’t used to drink coffee before freediving, but I have recently and don’t think I notice much a difference in my breathhold…but I’d have to experiment more to really know.)

Kole Tang - don’t be deceived by a quick glance, these fish are dressed to the nines in subtle style. Classy stripes paired with bold eye shadow, but even more importantly, they play a vital role to reef health. They are voracious herbivores, eating algae that could otherwise smother and kill coral. 🪸🐠💛

I can’t say for certain, but I am pretty sure that my white @cressi1946 fins attract eagle rays. Perhaps they see the flash of white and think it’s the underside of another eagle ray’s wing? But they’ll swim right up to and check me out!
I really do have special feelings for eagle rays. I’ve had some tough seasons and the ocean was a refuge for me. I would go out and just sit on the sand bed and sometimes an eagle ray would swim by, or a couple would start dancing around together…and it’s really hard to feel down when you’re watching a majestic, spotted ray soaring through the water around you 💙.

You’ve heard of humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa, but let me introduce to you: lauwiliwilinukunukuʻoiʻoi (Longnose Butterflyfish aka the fish in Finding Nemo that says “I’m obnoxious”). These fish have highly specialized snouts for getting invertebrates from tight spaces. I have seen them reaching through the spines of sea urchins to grab small shrimp, a move that definitely merits respect!
