Special Jury Award Winner: She’s Nonbinary

The strength of the screenplay and the honesty of the performances were key in telling a complex story with humor and humanity, reminding us that behind questions of identity and labels are, above all, people. For its sharp writing, nuanced performances, and deeply human approach, the jury is proud to recognize She’s Nonbinary, directed by Jess McLeod. by @salute_shorts

Best of Fest Honorable Mention: DISC
With a superb balance of humor and drama and a brilliantly awkward-yet-intimate chemistry delivered by its two leads, this film stood out to us for its bold concept, clever writing, and strong direction that combined to capture the human experience. Programmers Winner - Inside These Walls
This film with both beautiful cinematography and music and strong chemistry between the talent definitely fits Salute’s mantra of “films with aftertaste”, and the director was mentored by 2020 alum Erica Tremblay through a grant program. By shedding light on the often-overlooked realities of incarceration, it opens the door to empathy, understanding, and a collective call for change. It features several crew members and background extras who are formerly incarcerated individuals, providing genuine insight into the experiences portrayed. The PC Award goes to Inside These Walls by Melissa Fisher. by @salute_shorts

Programmers Honorable Mention - Em & Selma Go Griffin Hunting
It’s hard to make a decent fantasy film and this one is near PERFECT. With incredible VFX and stellar performances it explores timeless themes of intergenerational conflict, past traumas, and the difficult road to adulthood- filtered through a metaphorical fairy tale lens. Honorable Mention goes to Writer / Director Alexander Thompson for Em & Selma Go Griffin Hunting by @salute_shorts
