What happens when hair fibres are left on the scalp for years without being washed away?

In this reaction, Dr. Salvar Björnsson examines a case involving three years of unwashed hair fibres and the potential consequences of prolonged buildup on the scalp.

Hair fibres can be useful for temporarily disguising thinning hair, but there are other treatment options available. Proper scalp hygiene is essential, and hair fibres should always be used according to the product instructions. Never leave them on your scalp for years without washing your hair!

In this case, the buildup appears to have adhered so severely that removing it caused significant visible trauma to the scalp. While we cannot determine the full extent of the damage from the video alone, severe scalp injury can potentially affect the hair follicles and compromise future treatment options.

With appropriate scalp care and early intervention, this situation might have had a very different outcome. However, before considering any further treatment, the scalp needs time to heal and should be professionally assessed. Rushing into Micro Scalp Pigmentation (MSP) without allowing the skin to recover could create further complications.

For this patient, he had MSP done at the end of the video which gives the appearance of instant density. It may look great at first but, the issue here is that he did not leave his scalp to heal properly after the damage from the fibers before getting MSP done, which may impact results in a few weeks time. It is difficult to tell, but depending on the condition of the scalp and remaining follicles, other options like medication, non-surgical treatments or a hair transplant is viable if the patient is a suitable candidate.

If you are experiencing scalp irritation or product buildup, do not simply cover it up. Address the underlying issue first.

13 months ago, Kaique came to Vinci with advanced hair loss, classified as Norwood 5.

The goal was to rebuild the areas that had lost the most density, focusing on the hairline and mid frontal region. A total of 5,200 grafts were extracted and implanted during his procedure.
