I’m Cher, the designer behind Salvick Studio, a name woven from mine and my husband’s last names. I’m a born and raised New Yorker with a nontraditional, storied path that has taken me through several careers, countries, and creative pursuits. Those layered experiences shape how I see the world and design tremendously. As the oldest of four girls, I naturally bring that older-sister energy, and I’m often the friend you call when you have a bold idea and need someone to say, “Do it!” I’m that girl who used to spend every weekend dancing salsa in the city and dreamt about owning a brownstone. These days I’m obsessed with my garden, want to learn and third language and would prefer a mansard roof house.

I believe deeply in preserving the integrity of old homes. Save your old windows and doors please! My aesthetic celebrates antiques, handcrafted pieces, and spaces with soul. I don’t aim for perfection, I aim for homes that feel collected, meaningful, and lived in.

I design for people who are curious, culturally aware, and drawn to homes with history, people who want spaces that feel personal, not dictated by trends.

Design choices I make as a designer to help you slow down and avoid screens.

Homes are designed for the way you live your life. First the were centered around the fire, later the radio, and then later TV.

My first advice is to avoid the cues your home is giving you to look at your phone or a screen. Create new ones that tell you to slow down and put your phone, iPad, TV, video game away.

Pieces I'd always buy vintage as a millennial who's tired of replacing furniture.

We're the generation that's probably lived in a couple of apartments, shopped at IKEA and Target, and now we have refined our palates. I certainly have spent my fair share of money on pieces I regret.

I like to think about moments outside of the home, just as much as I consider the inside. This little corner off a kitchen deck became an opportunity to add charm. Instead of a random flood light to bring the house up to code, we used these frilly outdoor sconces in an aged copper finish and we slightly enlarged the window so the views outdoors were maximized.

What is luxurious in an old home? Part II

Things I love seeing in old homes:

Custom millwork, stained glass, breakfast nooks, pocket doors, and carriage houses.

Even simple humble workers cottages had some of these details which, most home builders are providing unless it’s at a premium. I love working with details like these!
