I’m officially taking that next step in the journey of my thesis film, my final film of my time in college. Seed&Spark is in the bio.

Now I’m gonna talk about my film.

A lot of you already know that my little cousin Lauren died of fentanyl poisoning three years ago. She was fifteen. It changed my life, my whole perspective on it. This hasn’t been easy. For so long I didn’t know how to heal, but then I remembered something so important.

I’m a storyteller. This is all I know how to do, this is all I’ll ever know how to do.

I’ve tried to tell this story since she passed, but I was doing it wrong. I wasn’t telling a story. I was just writing what happened. To me, that’s an imperfect way of healing through art. I think I’ve finally gotten it right.

With this film, a story of twins embarking on a hopeless revenge mission to avenge their kid sister, I didn’t want to tell Lauren’s story. I wanted to communicate a feeling. Not a feeling of grief, but of anger, desperation. In a twisted way, love too. When you lose a loved one, you frantically search for ways to give it meaning. You look for control.

But there is no control. The only thing left to do is choose how you go about this trauma. I’m choosing this.

My hometown hero, Ryan Coogler, said that when you sit down to tell a story, when you look at that blank page, you gotta think of who you love, and let that love motivate you like it has on this story here.

I’m not telling Lauren’s story, but I thought about her with every letter I put on that page.

This is my film. It’s called Dead Weeds.

A bit of an ironic title I know. I think she would’ve laughed at it.

This was written in a fever storm that I could not have survived without the powers of my friends and family. Your deep fingerprints are all over this. They’re potent and heavy and vital. I’m gonna be forever grateful for what you’ve allowed me to do.

I appreciate you all for rocking with me through this impossibly difficult time, but I can’t lie, this feels really nice.

Finding Figures

After 9 months of pre-production, it’s been unreal to see this script brought to life. Working with kind, egoless, talented, and immensely driven filmmakers over the past few months has been a blessing, and a reminder of the luck I’ve had, especially in the light of what’s been going on in LA and the world. Film is just a craft, and getting to do it is a privilege, not a right.

For a while, I was questioning my passion for filmmaking and all that comes with it. Seeing our principal actors treat the characters with such honesty and vulnerability, and a crew embrace the project and take it a step further has reassured me that there’s nothing else I’d rather do.

This film is dedicated to the many father figures I’ve had in my life, such as my uncle, mother’s late boyfriend, football and track coaches, english and film professors, as well as my aunt. But most of all it’s for my mom who’s always stood by me.
