The BEST December holiday deserves a beautiful anthem in the style of all those orchestral-1950s-crooner-pop songs sung about...that other holiday...

What an honor and a pleasure to be included in the Chicago Blues Festival this summer, which celebrated the 75th anniversary of Chess Records' studio at 2120 S Michigan Ave.

So surreal to share the stage with so many heavy hitters in the blues scene and descendants of blues royalty like Chuck Berry's son and grandson, Muddy Waters' son, and the daughters of Howlin' Wolf.

Although my grandpa (Papa Phil) made a name for himself on the other side of the control panel, I think he'd be proud to see me play some blues in his iconic studio.

Also, a HUGE thanks to the Willie Dixon Blues Heaven Foundation for its excellent stewardship of the Chess Records recording studio, which they've transformed into an amazing museum. Please check it out next time you're in Chicago!

Another one of the most creative trombonists to ever play was Bill Rank (and such a perfect name for a bone player) ––here's his solo on "Ostrich Walk".

But do check out the original recording, because while I got the notes here, I only got 10% of the vibe...he is one of the harder guys to imitate! Ready for another pass at this...
