Fabian Hambüchen - German Artistic Gymnast

Fabian won 3 Olympic medals over his career, becoming Olympic champion on Horizontal bar in Rio 2016🥇

As well as Olympic Silver in London 2012 and bronze in Beijing in the 2008 games, Fabian also collected 9 world championship medals and 11 European medals, making him one of Germanys most successful gymnasts of all time.🥇🥈🥉

Last month, In December of 2024, myself and @oldham93 had the pleasure of flying out to Germany to meet with @fabian.hambuechen and shoot some interviews with him and his father Wolfgang.

Between interviews, I managed to capture these portraits using the natural light shining into the gym📸

Thank you @fabian.hambuechen for your time and hospitality and being an absolute legend. It was an experience I will never forget.

The athlete’s that compete at the highest level in the sport of artistic gymnastics are unique in many ways. Mastering the human body in order to perform extraordinarily difficult skills requires dedication, discipline, sacrifice and resilience from an extremely young age. By the time these athletes begin their senior careers, they will have already passed the 10 thousand hour of skill mastery mark, made famous by the 2008 book Outliers. Many of these athletes find a place of belonging for the very first time in the sport of gymnastics, which allows them to express who they are through movement. As they develop into young adults the sport becomes a career path one which can be extremely challenging to navigate. In recent years the way in which Olympic athletes can financially support their ambitions has become increasingly more complex. This is something that concerns me a great deal and makes me question what we collectively value as a society. However one trait that separates the best athletes is their ability to adapt under pressure. I have no doubt that the current generation will continue to inspire future stars of the sport with dreams of representing their country on the biggest stage of all. The story behind the athlete has always been something that has captured my imagination since I was a child. I will continue to showcase the amazing sport of artistic gymnastics and the exceptional human beings that are at the very heart of it. The extraordinary bond that exists between the athlete and their coach is something that has always fascinated me. Two human beings at different stages in their life, working together towards a common goal, that represents something bigger than the individual. I believe that the sport of artistic gymnastics in its purest form is the pursuit of mastering the human body and mind. To nurture a young person and develop the technical skills required to attempt mastery is a remarkable achievement. That journey is a beautiful thing to observe and something that still captivates my imagination, twenty two years after first watching the Athens 2004 Olympic Games. Congratulations to my good friend @joshchamp1on and his athlete @zakaine_fawzi who successfully navigated the first chapter of this joint venture. 🇬🇧 Reflecting on my gymnastics performance at the British Gymnastics Team Championships on Saturday I feel incredibly inspired @britishgymnasticsofficial 🙌🏼

My goal remains to raise £2,000 for @parkinsonsuk and @samaritanscharity two incredible charities that make a positive difference to people’s lives every single day.

Five years after retiring from the sport of artistic gymnastics, I wanted to challenge myself by returning to competition and, in doing so, encourage other former athletes to get back into the gym and rediscover the sport they once loved.

If you would like to support this challenge by making a donation to either of these charities—or even both—we would be incredibly grateful. Every contribution, no matter the size, will help support the vital work they do.
