Have you noticed how the meaning of the verb “share” has changed in the last few years? It used to mean splitting something: as in, to share a meal. Or I think about a toddler, grabbing something nice for herself, and being told sternly: “share!”

Sharing used to be noble. But now “share” has a social media meaning.

I think about this a lot.

I don’t really like “sharing” on social media. I feel icky, like I’m asking people to approve of me, or think I’m cool. I do sort of like the scrapbook-y, memories, arty-photos all in one place part of it. The personal blog bit. But artists and filmmakers use instagram kind of like a personal website: it’s a record of everything you’ve worked on. Certainly, if I’m looking up a filmmaker I might like to work with, I look for them on instagram.

I guess, if I’m being honest, I’d much prefer to keep my “private life” - my friendships, relationships, holidays, parties etc - totally separate from my “work life”. But I don’t really know how to do that. (Make a ‘work’ account? Can it be that simple? Is it too late to do that, to disentangle two ‘sets’ of followers? Does anyone actually give a fuck? I want my work and my non work selves to be completely distinct. Like in Severance. (There are actually at least two other ‘Sam Brain’ instagram accounts, that previous versions of me made and lost the passwords to. Wish I could de-fossilise and delete these, (hah.)))

Anyway, for the time being, while this insta account is probably professionally meaningful - I became a BAFTA member. Which means that means someone, somewhere, gave me a validation badge in one area of my life. And now I’m “sharing” that with all of you (but not the noble kind of sharing. The ‘this is my CV, work with me!’ kind.) by @samantha.brainx

Photos up very late but — here are a few of our brill time at @tribeca film festival with old friends and new! It was so lovely to cheer on each other’s films - and to see them on the big screen with a full audience was something special.

Big thanks to @poppydamon -the best hostess in Brooklyn!

Incredibly lucky last year to have been the DP for “Vessel.” Made under the @maharlikauk project, the film explores the power of water, women, and Filipino artists.
A wonderful collaboration between the writing of @justincarlovr and @jess.nockxx_ , and direction from @samantha.brainx , made this such a special project.
It screened around the time the Philippines was experiencing extreme typhoons, so it felt incredibly meaningful to celebrate Filipino community and artists at the time. Truly honored to see the project have an effect on so many different generations in the audience, from grandchilderen to grandparents

“Vessel”, directed by me and centering on poems written by Jessica Nock and Justin Rivera, will screen at 83 Rivington St, Shoreditch at 7pm on Sunday 16 Nov. (There are ~15 tickets left if you wanna come! Link in Maharlika’s bio @maharlikauk)

I am so proud to have made this film with @justincarlovr and @jess.nockxx_. They had so much vision across the board, creating original art pieces and reams (reams!) of poetry to create the fabric of the film. Not to mention Jess’s central performance alongside her mum and godson AJ (@km_bautista ). Justin and Jess also did so so much heavy-lifting behind the scenes - not just creatively but also in admin and logistics.

Also HUGE thanks to @mattthedop who brilliantly rolled with whatever I threw him - thanks to @immattscott_dop who blessed the production from afar - and thanks to @domisjax and @joshuabenjamind for being our soundies. @sabfilms98 & Jess Speller for being camera & lighting team! Huge shoutout to the entire Maharlika cohort. To producer @who.is.chichi, Maharlika visionary in chief @itschrisreyes, who both gave such inspiring workshops alongside @sunshinetheafrooist. Not to mention our deep gratitude towards all the other Maharlika films that came in the years before ours - we exist because they did!

So excited to be billed alongside two more Maharlika commissions by @lancepenez, @spontakent, @charogalura, @imhelenayasmin and @jeffreysangalang. As well as visual artwork by @ch.nic, @lyndalorraine, @vjtgnhn and @goddessbuwan. What a truly life changing experience it has been to work alongside this group of artists. Although Ive had a personal few months of confusion and pain, working with them and seeing their work blossom has been a continuous, inspiring light. I feel I will be looking towards them, and their work, for many years to come.

We are all feeling deeply about the typhoons wreaking destruction on the Philippines at the moment. If you can, please donate via the mutual aid QR codes on my instagram stories.

🏆 ‘Do You Have Kids?’ WON Best Film and Best Editing at @hbfilmfest 🥰 by @samantha.brainx

🏆 Shell won Best Film at Tallahassee Film Festival 😍 Thank you so much @tallyfilmfest

Amazing how stories can travel… ✈️ by @samantha.brainx

Shell won the YOUTH JURY PRIZE at @womenxfest last week 🏆

I am generally rubbish at taking photos at events, luckily @sarahnocquet.mov always manages to do the right thing at the right moment. She brilliantly 1st ADed Shell and carried the film so often. I’m super grateful for her friendship, and for the support of everyone who worked together to breathe life into the film. Special props to @brains.pdf, @emmabreschi and Lourdes Fabreres 🩷

It was an amazing and profound experience to watch films by, and sit alongside, so many women and gender nonconforming filmmakers, at this festival. Thank you @carisrianne and @riannepictures pictures for the enormous work put into the festival. I was gutted to miss the awards themselves but I had to head home to work!

I was really proud to see both DO YOU HAVE KIDS and SHELL on the big screen in Darlington. It’s special to get to see an audience react to your work.

The world is heavy, but we keep on. Just a little bit, and never enough. But we keep on. by @samantha.brainx
