Things I wish I knew before renovating our 1960s home as my own interior designer ✨🏡

1. Have a clear vision from the beginning. Create a mood board and stick to it. I changed my mind so many times throughout the renovation process, and it definitely shifted the original aesthetic I was going for.

2. Plan specialty lighting early. If you want bedside wall sconces, picture lights, or custom lighting features, install them while the walls are already open. It’s much easier (and cheaper) during renovation.

3. Add recessed lighting if your older home doesn’t already have it. This completely transformed some of our darker spaces and made the house feel so much more updated.

4. Consider vaulting ceilings + adding skylights. If you have attic space you’ll never use, this can make an older home feel dramatically larger, brighter, and more custom.

5. Splurge on the pieces you use every day. Save on smaller decor items, but invest in the things that impact your daily life most… flooring, sofas, plumbing fixtures, etc. (need to take my own advice!)

6. Too many opinions will confuse you. Trust your gut and your vision. Outside opinions can quickly make the design process overwhelming.

7. Be decisive whenever possible. Not making decisions upfront can seriously delay a renovation timeline.

8. New flooring was a total game changer for us. Our old floors were pretty damaged, and replacing them completely transformed the feel of our home. If you’re on the fence, do it.

9. Things will go wrong constantly. Renovating an older home requires flexibility. You’ll pivot a hundred times, get creative, and somehow it always comes together in the end.

10. Design for your life right now. Whether it’s your starter home or forever home, furnish and renovate based on your current lifestyle and routine, not a future version of yourself or what might be more appealing “if” you plan on selling down the road.

I could probably write an entire book on this whole experience but hope this helps other people renovating!

Living room is slowly coming together and I absolutely love our new rug from @armadilloandco ! The texture is perfect and the deep green shade is even better. I had been eyeing it for months and so glad we pulled the trigger. But next time I might consider the white glove delivery. Don’t be fooled by the 25 second Timelapse, my back says otherwise 🙃

Using this snow day to focus on our next project: the primary closet. We decided to convert one of our spare bedrooms into additional closet space—a slightly controversial choice, but one that makes sense for us in this chapter. A place to hold pieces with memories and feel a little inspired in the everyday. Cozy, inviting, and functional, nothing too precious. At the end of the day, it’s just a closet. Are we team off white or wood tones?

A quiet but impactful office update, rooted in restraint. Out went the 60s paneling, carpeting, and dated details. In came white oak floors, refined trim, and recessed lighting. Entirely cosmetic, yet completely transformative. After a week off unpacking, returning to work today felt like the right moment to share an empty office tour. Ready to layer in the rest!
