A home is more than a place to live; it can be a place where souls find rest, hearts find warmth, and meaningful connections are nurtured. ❤️

As Family Life Practitioners, hosting people comes with the job description. But, truthfully, it is something we genuinely love doing!

We always knew our home would be more than a private family space. We envisioned it as a place of respite, where people could exhale, share, laugh, learn, find encouragement and leave refreshed.

Recently, we had the privilege of hosting 10 amazing leaders, and it was such a beautiful experience! The conversations, laughter, wisdom shared and connections made were both fun and deeply impactful.

We are reminded that even those who pour into others need spaces where they can be poured into.

As Hebrews 13:2 reminds us, we should not neglect hospitality, for through it, some have entertained angels unawares.

Sometimes, ministry is not behind a pulpit. Sometimes, it is around a dining table, through a warm conversation and the simple act of making room for others.

To our amazing guests, thank you for making our home richer with your presence. ❤️

May our homes always have room for God’s purpose and for people.

Kindness was the first thing you looked for. Is it still the first thing you give?

When Zikoko asked more than 10,000 Nigerians what they want most in a partner, kindness came out on top for both men and women, ahead of looks and financial stability.

It makes sense. Kindness is what makes someone feel safe, seen and chosen. It is why people fall for each other.

And yet, ask any couple a decade in what has quietly gone missing, and kindness is often near the top. Not cruelty. Just the small stuff: the tone when you are tired, the eye-roll, the short answer, the "I'm busy", the compliment that stopped.

Researchers who study couples, such as John Gottman, have long found that stable couples keep far more positive moments than negative ones, roughly five good for every one bad during conflict. Warmth is not decoration. It is structure.

This week, try three things. Say one specific thank-you each day. Use your first-meeting voice when you walk in the door. And when you are about to say something sharp, pause and ask what you actually need.

The marriage you want is built from the same quality you went looking for. It just needs to be practised.

Premarital counselling cannot be one lecture the week before the wedding."

Faith leaders across Nigeria are asking for more structure. At the 2026 Ajase-Ipo Annual Imams Conference in Kwara State, clerics lamented rising divorce and called for counselling units in central mosques, offering premarital counselling and post-marital support. Churches have long asked couples for counselling before a wedding. The intention is right in every case.

The challenge is design. A single talk, a short checklist and a blessing cannot prepare two people for conflict, money, intimacy, in-laws and the first hard year.

A strong programme has stages: before engagement, before the wedding, the first year, and year three. It has tools: assessments, conversation guides, and clear referral routes when a couple needs more than a mentor. And it trains the people running it, because good intentions are not the same as being equipped.

If you lead a mosque, church, school or community group, the next step is not another talk. It is a pathway: stages, tools and trained facilitators who know what to ask, what to listen for, and when to refer.

Strong men also need somewhere to put the weight down.

Many Nigerian men were raised on the same unspoken rule: provide, protect, and do not complain. Pressure was something you carried quietly. Silence was proof of strength.

With World Mental Health Day this Saturday, 10 October, that rule is being questioned more openly. Nigerian fathers and young men are speaking about money worries, family responsibility and the feeling that they just have to keep going, even when they are tired.

It matters for marriage because withdrawal is easy to misread. When he goes quiet, spends longer at work, or seems irritable, it can look like he does not care. Often it is closer to this: he is carrying more than he has ever had practice putting into words.

If you are a husband, a father or a son carrying more than you say, ask one safe person this week for something small: a listening ear, ten minutes, an honest “I’m not doing great.”

If you are the person who loves him, ask softly, and be willing to stay for the answer.

Strength is not the absence of weight. It is knowing where to put it down. If the weight feels heavy, please reach out to someone you trust or a mental health professional.

“Attraction is a miracle.” - In the words of my dad. ❤️

And I believe a miracle like that deserves to be celebrated, cherished, and expressed without shame.

When you find someone you’re genuinely drawn to, someone whose presence delights you and whose heart you desire to know, why should loving them become something you hide?

To be naked and not ashamed is to be comfortable enough in love to be seen. Not because your relationship is perfect, but because you have nothing to be ashamed of in choosing, honouring, and loving each other.

Your love doesn’t have to be loud, but it shouldn’t have to live in hiding either.

Being special is not a reason to avoid the public eye. Sometimes, it is all the more reason to stand proudly beside the person you love, to hold their hand without hesitation, and to let the world know, “I am glad this is my person.”

Of course, privacy is healthy. Every relationship deserves boundaries. But privacy is different from secrecy, and there is a difference between protecting your relationship and hiding the person you’re in a relationship with.

So, celebrate the miracle of attraction. Relish the gift of finding someone you love. Be intentional about the love you share, and don’t be ashamed to let it show.

Be naked and not ashamed. ❤️

Can marrying a Christian guarantee a divorce-proof marriage?

Is the man’s role in the home simply to provide?

These are two common beliefs we explored during our Debunking the Marriage Myth conversation, and they invite us to think more deeply about what makes a marriage healthy and sustainable.

Faith is important, but a healthy marriage also requires intentionality, emotional maturity, communication, accountability, and a willingness to grow.

And while provision is important, marriage calls for more than fulfilling a single role. It requires partnership, shared responsibility, love, mutual understanding and a complete dependence on the provincial nature of Jehovah Jireh.

Sometimes, what we have always believed deserves to be examined. Not to dismiss our values, but to understand them better and build healthier relationships.

Let’s keep the conversation going!

Which of other beliefs have you encountered and what are your thoughts?

Share your perspective and let’s learn from one another!

You can share a bed, a budget and a surname and still feel like housemates.

There is a quiet kind of marriage problem that does not look like a problem. No shouting. No dramatic betrayal. The bills are paid, the children are fed, the calendar is managed. And yet both of you feel strangely alone.

Therapists and relationship writers call it roommate syndrome: when a couple functions well as a household but has stopped functioning as a pair. Conversations are transactional. Affection is rare. Weekends are about errands. Everyone is polite and nobody is close.

It develops gradually, which is exactly why it is easy to miss. It is also common, and it is reversible when both people notice it and respond.

Start small. Ten minutes a day with no phones. One real question each evening, like "What was the best and hardest part of your day?" Touch that is not a prelude to something else. One thing a week that is just for the two of you, not for the household.

Your relationship may be stable. It can still be warmer. Do not wait for a crisis to ask for more than logistics.

In-law trouble is usually a marriage conversation in disguise.

A clash between a bride and her mother-in-law at a wedding reception went viral this year and set off a loud national debate about family expectations in marriage.

Most couples will never have a public moment like that. But many have a private version of it: a parent who expects daily updates, a sibling who expects financial help, a relative who has opinions about the children, the house, the job.

Nigerian marriages are rarely just two people. Family carries real roles, and for many couples that is a gift. It turns into a strain when nobody has agreed what the roles are.

Here is the pattern worth noticing: the fight is rarely about the in-law. It is about whether the two of you are a team. When one spouse feels unprotected, or the other feels torn, the family issue is just where it surfaces.

Agree privately first. Let each person speak to their own family. Honour elders without handing over the final say. Revisit the agreement as life changes.

Respect for family and a united marriage can live together. They just need a plan you made as a couple.

Let’s talk about it.
