Wellington-based photographer Sambath Ouch has been putting the FUJIFILM GFX100RF through its paces, from behind-the-scenes moments on set to detailed product work, and one thing stood out straight away: how naturally it fits into the flow of shooting.

“It has quietly become one of those cameras I don’t overthink anymore, I just bring it everywhere. And that says a lot. What really surprised me is how non-intrusive it feels on set. Normally, pulling out a medium format camera comes with a bit of… presence. People notice, it shifts energy. But with this, I can literally move around, capture moments, and stay invisible. No disruption, no breaking the rhythm of a scene, just pure observation. That alone makes it incredibly powerful for behind-the-scenes work.

And then there’s the image quality… which is honestly ridiculous. You’re working with so much detail that it changes how you shoot. I don’t feel locked into a composition anymore. I can frame a bit wider, knowing I’ve got the freedom to crop later without losing that cinematic feel. And that 102MP sensor is a game changer for product photography too. When you’re shooting
products, especially skincare, jewelry, or anything detail-driven, you need absolute precision. Every texture, every reflection, every tiny imperfection matters. With this level of resolution, you can capture insane micro-details while keeping the image super clean and refined.’ by @sambath
