MEMBER SPOTLIGHT | SAM BOAL @samboalphoto @collinsphotoagency

From taking two film cameras to Dublin protests at 18, to more than a decade working professionally, Sam Boal’s route into photojournalism began with his dad, and plenty of trial, support and learning along the way.

Now with Collins Photos, Sam reflects on the people who shaped his career, the unpredictability of the job and why great photography still matters.

Following are the words of Sam Boal:

I got my first ‘proper’ camera when I was 18, from my Dad, who got me started in photography.

In those early days, I would attend any protest taking place in Dublin on a Saturday. Seeing professionals use two cameras, I copied them by taking two film cameras. Then my Dad and I would critique the images, comparing them with the professionals’ pictures and figuring out how I could do better next time.

From there, I studied for a BA in Photographic Media at Griffith College Dublin. On graduation, Leon Farrell gave me the chance to do work experience and, thanks to Leon and Eamon, I worked my way into a job with them for over 11 years. Laura Hutton and Mark Stedman also guided me along the way.

I later moved to Collins Photo Agency, where I am today.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my job is working alongside so many PPI members. I’ve had the chance to photograph American Presidents, British royalty and the everyday “normal” person. Each brings its own excitement and trepidation. No two days are the same, and what you expect can easily change.

I can’t just take a picture without feeling the emotion of the story. Maybe that helps me figure out what the image needs to be to tell that story.

There are always times when you see someone else’s great picture and think, “How did I not see or get that one?”

I’m hugely grateful to everyone who has given me advice over the years.

The rise of fake content and increasingly vindictive social media is troubling but I remain confident that great images still have an impact.

Photojournalism can sometimes be lonely and demanding so I have huge admiration for everyone in this industry, and I look forward to seeing you on the next assignment. by @samboalphoto

Great to get the page 1 of the Irish daily mirror with this image which I spotted and was able to capture showing Hansard's wife walking past her husband's basket coffin, in a few moments where despite the thousands there, it's was a few seconds of peace. almost like she was there in an empty street. photo: Sam boal/Collins Photos by @samboalphoto
