I was especially excited when I learnt that the project would be taking place in Bhutan and after watching Michael Palin’s documentary on his visit to the country, I was inspired to capture the vibrant Himalayan landscapes and ornate Bhutanese architecture in their rawest form, so I knew shooting on film was the way to go. The project relied entirely on natural light, which in the Himalayas is constantly shifting, along with the weather. They don’t call Bhutan “The Land of the Thunder Dragon” for nothing. Thankfully, the latitude of film is incredibly forgiving. I love the way the stock renders contrast, gently rolling off highlights while lifting the shadows, compressing the extremes into a more pleasing middle ground. I also find the colours to be more nuanced than their digital counterparts; rich and dense without feeling overwhelming or oversaturated, closer to the way we actually experience a place with our own eyes. I chose to shoot on Kodak Vision3 500T because I wanted a more pronounced grain structure. For me, grain adds another layer to the image, binding everything together while subtly softening the frame and enhancing the atmosphere of a place like Bhutan. We had an international cast and crew travelling from Korea, Germany, Canada, Italy and the UK. With only six days on the ground in Bhutan, the schedule was intense. by @samcoombesdp

NEER Cinematographer Sam Coombes for KOLON TRAIL RUN BHUTAN “I was stoked when I got the call to shoot a project for Kolon Sport, promoting their upcoming Trail Race that takes place in October 2026. I was especially excited when I learnt that the project would be taking place in Bhutan and after watching Michael Palin’s documentary on his visit to the country, I was inspired to capture the vibrant Himalayan landscapes and ornate Bhutanese architecture in their rawest form, so I knew shooting on film was the way to go.
