WILD PLACES. SAME SUN.
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
A little about me —

My name is Calvin, I’m a self-taught published professional photographer.

I got into photography by accident, it started with drones and my love for remote controlled “things” and quickly turned into “wait this is actually really fun.” I don’t want to admit how long it took for me to fully grasp aperture, ISO, and shutter speed— but I digress.

I’ve always been adventurous and someone who likes trying new things. That’s now taken me to some very remote places of the world and I can’t wait to keep exploring.

At the detriment to my back, even on big crazy hikes, I like to take my main cameras with me — my Hasselblad X2D Explorer Edition, and my Sony A7RV. It always crosses my mind “but what if I see something super cool?!” Absolutely will not miss that opportunity to have my cameras with me.

I am a storyteller at heart and love talking about the adventures I’ve been on and how I get myself into the crazy things I do.

If you’ve read this far, thanks for being a part of this journey and I hope you enjoy this collection of photographs of my life and my experiences. It’s a genuine pleasure to share them with you.

There’s always time to stop and smell the flowers, specially the petunias. by @same_sun_studio

Fall in Colorado 🍂🍁💛🧡🇺🇸

This whole trip was so special — we headed up Rabbit Ears Pass to see the leaves changing in Steamboat Springs, CO. Some of the most spectacular fall colors I’ve ever seen, the snowcapped mountains, changing leaves, but still green - 10/10 beautiful.

Tiny high-country flower-munchin’ machines 🐿️🌸

Rocky Mountain chipmunks are absolute little machines, spending the summer months munching (same) and caching food for winter.

I caught this little guy eating some flowers and enjoying the view, we both stopped to look at the flowers (I deny eating any flowers myself…) on top of the Blue Lakes just below Mt. Sneffels.

Puffins! 🐧
I had ONE day in Iceland after my trip to the northern arctic. The entire time I was in the arctic, I was looking for puffins, but they don’t usually fly up that far north. We surprisingly saw a few, but I wasn’t able to catch them nesting and feeding like this.

I was on a mission to see the puffins and get some good puffin shots per special request from my girlfriend, I needed to make it happen.

I heard rumor that the lighthouse in Vik, Iceland was the place to go. Landing in Reykjavik from Greenland at about 3pm, I got a rental car as quick as I could and made my way a few hours south down to Vik. I only stopped about 1,000 times along the way with all the beauty that is in Iceland, and thankfully made it to Vik just around sunset.

I spent a few hours on the coast enjoying serene beauty of the Black Sands Beach and was able to find some of the puffin nests nestled high in the cliffs.

Hanging over a very sketchy cliff and with enough patience, I finally had this little guy come right up to me with a mouth full of food for their young. He stopped to check me out with much curiosity and then tucked into his nest to feed his young.

It had been raining all morning, nothing crazy, but a consistent drizzle. I was asked many times if my camera was waterproof…. I didn’t have a good answer for that question.

We were sailing further west, deeper into the Scoresby Sund Fjord in eastern Greenland when suddenly we saw it — the crown jewel of “super cool looking icebergs”, a very technical term.

It was raining just hard enough that it didn’t make sense to use the drones. But we couldn’t pass up an opportunity like this, not with a piece of ice so incredibly magnificent.

So — we launched the zodiac. Getting pelted by rain, soaked by the salty seawater of the choppy waves in the storm, I was soaked. My camera was soaked. I was on the radio with the boat, trying to position the boat (moving) with the backdrop of the iceberg (also moving) while in a small zodiac (also also moving)…. Super fun (but actually).

When the shot presented itself — I yelled loudly to Birk, our zodiac captain to radio the boat to stop. We were there. I snapped this shot, one of the only shots I took, and just knew that it was the one.

Check this one out and many more on my website, linked in bio. Thanks for staying along to read about how this epic shot came to be!

A hole into another world. ⛰️

The ascent to the top of Castle and Conundrum Peaks has been by far the most beautiful 14ers I’ve summited (sorry, Sneffels).

Just past 6:27am, I came upon a wall with a narrow opening and on the other side? Another world. The light hit the far peaks just perfectly. I was stunned and shocked and sat there just soaking in the beauty.

These shots - and more - from this trip are all available for purchase on our print store, linked in bio.

Alone.

Just past 7am at 14,265 feet standing atop Castle Peak nestled in the White River National Forest, I spotted this solo hiker behind us making their way to the summit.

Catching the hiker with the dramatic backdrop of the high peaks behind shows the scale of the Colorado Rockies.

Grab these prints in a trio from our store, linked in bio.

Hike in the high country in Colorado long enough and you are sure to see (and hear) these mighty little critters.

Tiny, loud, and tougher than they look - Pikas don’t hibernate. They spend the short alpine summer building hay piles to survive the winter beneath the rocks. A single Pika can make hundreds of foraging trips while building their winter food stash.

Have you heard a Pika “eep!” At you before?

Lots of pictures of these adorable little critters are available on our website as part of our small mountain critters collection. Link in bio for prints.

Just after 11pm in the northern Arctic circle, just past 80° north, I heard “WHALE!” and “GRAB THE DRONE!”

I rushed to the upper deck of the S/V Linden, it was still bright as mid-day sun even at 11pm in the high Arctic, the sun never sets. It was some of the calmest waters any of us, the captain, and the crew, have ever seen in the Fram Straight. It was easy to spot the blow of the blue whale.

I quickly launched my drone, rushing to fly over to her — a majestic 100 foot long blue whale.

She came right next to the boat, we followed her in the crystal clear waters until she dove deep and disappeared.

Captured here are a few shots of her, the full gallery is available for purchase and download on our website, linked in bio.
