Okay this one was SPICY 😏 but honestly, get that final summer romance read in before we’re back in sweaters. Aaliyah is confident that she’s ready to find her person, but less confident when it comes to how she’s going to find him. So, when hot bartender Ahmed offers to help… I mean come on, you know what’s going to go down.

📖 Rarely have I seen dating app turmoil so well documented, but pair this up with YA book Tweet Cute by Emma Lord to go full blown millennial!

📖 There’s a side plot to Aaliyah’s story that involves some pretty toxic family members, and it reminded me a lot of Lisa Fipp’s middle grade novel Starfish about how to create responsible and necessary boundaries!

📖 Pair this with Nabela Noor and Nabi Ali’s Beautifully Me because to love every single part of who you are, curves and all, is a core tenet of both stories! by @samepagebookblog

This dual narrative between Raquel, a young art history student of the late nineties, and Anita de Monte, an indie standout artist of the late eighties, lends a mirror to one another as they strive for love, opportunity, ambition, and space to be the fullest versions of themselves. Though it’s great fun to watch their stories entangle, you’ll find yourself running the emotional gamut with these two women. Enjoy!

📖 A core tenet of this book is unpacking the layers of women’s history, which often goes unexplored. Pair this with YA book We Deserve Monuments by Jas Hammond for a similar thematic lens!

📖 I pair this with middle grade book Doodles from the Boogie Down by Stephanie Rodriguez not just because of its art connection (though the title doesn’t hurt!), but because of its fish-out-of-water narrative that is reflected through Steph’s eyes as she enters an elite school.

📖 I searched high and low for my own art history education, and discovered Art From Her Heart, a picture book autobiography by Kathy Whitehead and Shane Evans. Haven’t heard of Clementine Hunter? Go on your own Raquel-style exploration and learn about this fascinating artist! by @samepagebookblog

Dolly Alderton is a fantastic writer, and Good Material might be my favorite yet. I don’t know why it surprised me so much to read about a heterosexual relationship’s breakup from the male point of view, but I was just so captivated by its realistic portrayal and laugh out loud moments. Definitely worth a read.

📖 I just read YA book Last Boyfriend’s Rules for Revenge by Matthew Hubbard and that same break up energy will keep you riveted (though these boys are not straight!)

📖 I just love when a book can make me laugh and cry and then straight back to laughing, so pair this with middle school darling I Funny by James Patterson, which has a lot more to it than one might be expecting!

📖 I thought picture book The Broken Heart by Aaron Chan was such a perfect introduction to young readers about heart break, so definitely check this out!# by @samepagebookblog

Rainbow Roswell’s characters are so deliciously ordinary, so wonderfully human, that it would hardly feel surprising if they popped up right next to you. I mean, if I lived in rural Nebraska, though I digress. When old friends Shiloh and Cary reunite at a wedding, what could have been becomes what may be becomes what will be. Shout out to @harvardbookstore for hosting @rainbowrowell for a fabulous talk!!

📖 I just learned that there’s a trope in YA called “second-chance romance,” and for me, Patrick and Alice give Shiloh and Carey a run for their money. Pair this with Now I’ll Tell You Everything by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor.

📖 Shiloh and Carey are friends at their core, and the way they carry one another’s baggage as if it’s their own feels reminiscent of Marco and Isaac in middle grade novel Falling Short by Ernesto Cisneros (note: not a love story, but friendship is its own kind of love, no?)

📖 Picture book Why Not? by Kobi Yamada is all about what possibilities the future holds. I imagine Carey and Shiloh would read it to their child one day. by @samepagebookblog

Summer is here, but this is a different kind of lake read. This gorgeously illustrated YA book is about two girls who return to their lake homes in Awago Beach, yet leaving their worries and problems behind is getting harder as they get older. The Tamaki sisters are unmatched!

📖 In the great ocean vs. lake debate, I stand firmly by the lake. There’s definite bias in this call as I spent my summers enjoying the various lakes of Maine, but there ya go. Pair this with picture book The Little Blue Cottage by Kelly Jordan and Jessica Courtney-Tickle!

📖 I really wanted to find a strong coming-of-age summer read to pair as my middle grade choice, so I’ve chosen Half a Chance by Cynthia Lord!

📖 The friendship between the two girls is the heartbeat of the story in its intensity and power, so I’ve paired it with adult novel Summer Sisters by Queen Judy Blume! by @samepagebookblog

It’s been a minute, but I’m coming in strong with this recommendation because I haven’t stopped raving about this book. Alone is a middle grade novel in verse about a girl who wakes up alone in her town that’s been mysteriously evacuated. This is one of those books that has lingered with me months after reading, because it’s exactly what I think a middle grade read needs right now - evocative emotion, sense of adventure, and of course, a lot of hope. Think Hatchet with a female heroine and a Rottweiler. Enjoy enjoy enjoy!!

📖 There is a lot to be said about discussing loneliness with little ones. Though Alone might be an extreme example, use picture book Beegu by Alexis Deacon to explore this theme!

📖 I do not normally go for dystopian fiction, but pair this with YA book Be Not Far From Me by Mindy McGinnis and thank me later!

📖 I really wanted to emphasize the line in Alone that has stayed with me. “My muscles are confused but my mind is steady.” The clarity and exhaustion all rolled into one woman made me think of Kya in Where The Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens! by @samepagebookblog

This was a toughie to write, it’s a toughie to think about as I venture on a newer career path, and it will probably continue to be a toughie as I consider how to enact positive, sustainable change amongst those I work with. I think this is my first post with entirely nonfiction recommendations, so enjoy! by @samepagebookblog

I’m going through a bit of my own teeny existential crisis lately, and this picture book has Carl the Earthworm questioning his own purpose. The book by Deborah Freedman is very endearing, and there are fun dips in the text to illustrate Carl’s movements. It also reminds us of the differences we make, no matter how small we seem.

📖 I couldn’t recommend Peter Brown’s The Wild Robot middle grade series not only for its plant/animal understanding, but also for the way Roz searches for her own “why?”

📖 Never underestimate the power of the Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien. Frodo, Bilbo, and all of their friends are proof that size is no barometer for what can be achieved.

📖 Young adult are always thinking about what lies ahead, but look no further than Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life by Wendy Mass to have a great book companion along the way! by @samepagebookblog

They were here. Who, you may ask? The women of the Vietnam War who risked their own life and safety to take care of soldiers fighting one of our country’s most controversial wars. Kristin Hannah does it again with prodigious research and a story that sucks you in right from the jump. No spoilers but would love to know people’s take on Rye. I got thoughts.

📖 I was really on the lookout for some female unsung heroes to pair this story with, and came across picture book Maya Lin: Artist-Architect of Light and Lines by Jeanne Walker Harvey and Dow Phumiruk. She created the Vietnam Veterans Memorial!

📖 I have the upmost respect for nurses, and I even once dressed up as Clara Barton for a school presentation! Turn to the Who Was… series by Stephanie Spinner to learn about Clara and her own front line experience!

📖 When it comes to truth, look no further than the stories Steve Sheinkin tells. He has a YA book entitled Most Dangerous: Daniel Ellsberg and the Secret History of the Vietnam War! by @samepagebookblog
