we had been looking forward to running linger through the Somersault for so long! its been a long-time aesthetic favorite of ours (put a rainbow on anything and you have our attention) and the sounds here did not disappoint. its lush, it’s pretty, it warbles in all the right ways. a modulator that it chockablock full of sounds and still plays nicely enough to not sound completely out of pocket in a mix. lets worble.

linger by the cranberries played through the Red Panda Tensor

the same cassette of “Linger” by The Cranberries played through the Tensor time warp pedal.

what happens when you take a tape and run it into a box that behaves like a hyper controllable tape and then to a guitar amplifier? there is way too much going on with the Tensor to cover in the course of one song, but i tried to show off just how many wonderful and odd sounds come out of it immediately. slow, fast, pitch, looping, chaos, Tensor can really take any single and either mangle or beyond recognition or simply pretty it up and add some depth (depending on your mood).

linger by the cranberries played through the Mask Audio Electronics Neck Brace

the same cassette of “Linger” by The Cranberries played through the Neck Brace 3-stage OTA Phaser.

today we’re getting wooshy with it in honor of the MAE Neck Brace. Neck Brace is the only phaser I’ve ever truly loved, controls are simple but the sounds are gorgeous. between a toggle and a rate knob, Neck Brace swings from 17 second phase cycles to near-ring modulated sounds with all the bases between covered. been using this one for a few days on guitar now and it can cover absolutely anything from subtle movement to spice things up or bonkers faux synth glitching run into an appropriately slammed fuzz.

linger by the cranberries played through the Electronic Audio Experiments Hypersleep

the same cassette of “Linger” by The Cranberries played through the Hypersleep solid-state analog reverberator.

enter the caves of a distant comet where somewhere a coven of witches is hosting a ritual set to the soothing tones of “Linger”. our portal here was opened by the now impossible-to-track-down Hypersleep reverb from EAE. like everything EAE makes it is beautiful, dangerous, and strange. flit with us from seasick echoes bent around just another corner of the tunnel, surely, to metallic and beautiful washes that fill out the natural lush of the song in a way that seem like they’ve always been there.

linger by the cranberries played through the Cat Box Customs Bean Machine v1

the same cassette of “Linger” by The Cranberries played through the Bean Machine percolator.

the Bean Machine is Cat Box’s take on the storied harmonic percolator circuit. it takes anything, dips it in jagged medal and sharpens it to a point between just bashing it into the floor with a clang. the toggles flip the circuit between high and low gain, change or remove the type of clipping diodes, and change the texture of the voice to higher or lower harmonics. its crammed full of wonderful sounds, it has the classic nasty Albini bite inside but can bounce all over the gain spectrum to be almost anything you’d need.

linger by the cranberries played through the MAE Line Blur

the same cassette of “Linger” by The Cranberries played through the Line Blur EQ/Preamp.

i don’t mean to shock you, but i’m kind of a bonehead when it comes to how pedals actually work and why i like certain sounds over others. because of this, i have never in my life got along with a more complex EQ pedal (or even a compressor, until recently). Alec told me he was making an EQ for folks like me, and boy howdy did he deliver. Line Blur just makes everything sound better. it’s flexible, emphasizes the good bits and tamps down the bad ones, and on top of that it just gets a bit extreme in the way all good Mask Audio pedals do. it takes linger and spits it through a tin can, a tube screamer, a subwoofer yr neighbor two doors down has up too loud, turns it into silly putty for you to tweak and mold however you see fit.

the same cassette of “Linger” by The Cranberries played through the Dweller Phase Repeater.

Dweller is a weird little creature. it remembers things, sometimes well, sometimes a bit glossier than they were before. tons of fun messing with it like a delay pedal that brings its own musicality to the mix here. Dweller takes linger and makes it sound like how it feels to wake up from a dream where yr hanging out at some shitty bar but the cranberries come on the jukebox and everything is okay for just a moment.

linger by the cranberries played through the Dirge Electronics Slowly Melting

the same cassette of “Linger” by The Cranberries played through the Slowly Melting Glitch/Fuzz/Chorus/Delay.

the Slowly Melting is a personal favorite of mine. absolutely weird, absolutely destructive, absolutely beautiful. inside this box you've got the well-known PT2399 delay chip, but Dirge has pushed it well beyond its breaking point to a place where distortion and delay and glitch and fuzz all blend together into one lovely pool of bubbling sonic goo. the Melt knob/footswitch loops the output of the circuit back into the input to overload things even more and stack layers on top of broken, shattered, lovely layers. melt forever.

the same cassette of “Linger” by The Cranberries played through the Digitech Turbo Flange Stereo Flanger (mono output, sorry!).

the Turbo Flange is part of Digitech's X-Series of pedals, the whole line is aggressively slept on if you ask me. flange is an effect i almost never reach for personally, but this purple box has me covered in the event i ever do. the "step" mode at the end of the video really has no idea what to do with a full mix and provides some wonderfully interesting broken results. might do another demo just of the step mode? was sad i only got to show off a bit.

the Dust is a weirdo fuzz/looper/delay/chorus monster and has quickly become one of my favorite pedals. it’s gnarly as hell (as you can hear lmao), and the freeze on it makes some truly magical things possible. dolores’ doubling as the hold time knob heads above noon is eerie and beautiful and lovely and nightmarish, all at once. by @samesong.diffpedal
