I’ve started making my own music again lately. @night_auras is my side project if you want to follow as I noodle about creating soundscapes with brass & old 80s synths. Excitingly, my next project will also feature actual SONGS that I have written with a number of my favourite artists. I hope to finish tracking everything before the end of the year. I’ve been touring one of my favourite records ‘XTRMNTR’ with @primalscreamofficial - playing my 🎺 into a pedal board: Reverse engineering & putting my own spin on all the effects Andrew Innes, Kevin Shields & Bobby ran the horns through when producing & mixing the record. Part Miles Davis ‘On The Corner’, part heavy rock & techno, with rock & roll, funk and full throttle, warped fury thrown in. As a horn player, the opportunity to play music like this - as well as all the iconic lines originally recorded by the Memphis Horns in the encore songs - is unique. 3 nights at Barrowlands the ultimate highlight. Very grateful.🤘🎸🎺

HEADLINE HORNS 🎺🎷🪊 - a brief story: A few weeks ago I received a message asking if I was free for a phone call regarding some horn arranging work. I decided to take the call whilst out on a late evening stroll (away from noisey kids bedtime). Wandering around waiting for the phone to ring, I listened on loop to a beautiful song I had discovered that I really love called “Dan” by American artist ‘Noah Kahan’. As I settled on a bench outside a local pub, interrupting around about the 7th listen, the phone rang. Amazingly, I found myself being asked if I was interested in writing & arranging (and recording reference tracks) horn parts for three @noahkahanmusic songs for his upcoming live shows. I then walked straight into the pub and ordered a pint. The barman gave me a jar to shake with two dice inside & told me that if I rolled a double six the beer was free. I rolled a double six.

Odds of rolling a double six first time to get a free beer: 1 in 36. Odds of being asked to work with an artist you were literally just listening to: not sure.

First gig I ever did with @primalscreamofficial has been pressed to limited edition vinyl: XTRMNTR, Live from The Roundhouse, London. Playing about with 🎺 wah pedal, chorus & odd reversed delays to recreate the incredible skewed horn-wonk of the original record.

LOVELAND! New @sukiwaterhouse album out today. The record opens with my 🎺🪊🎷. Thanks @julesapollinaire (and @findlaymusic) for inviting me to contribute as horn arranger (playing 🎺🪊) on the lead single Back In Love. I’m always trying my best with arrangements to serve the song - and on this joyful banger I was glad to be fully encouraged to properly go all out at the end. I got @lumbersax round, and we went for it! 🎉🙌

On the engineering front, this was the first song I tried a combo of Coles 4038 & new fave MD441-U - really making sure I wasn’t particularly pointing right at either of them. Really worked great, massive weight to the tone and a really natural sound. Now my go to setup. Neumann on the sax. by @samewens

FIRST ALBUM IN 44 YEARS. In 1982, these legends topped the charts with the completely wonderful & unique, funk-pop record ‘Pelican West’. Its been an absolute pleasure playing a part in their record-breakingly long awaited 2nd album. Horns written & recorded across a few different studios, including my own. Every song is a cast iron beauty. LETS GO, HAIRCUT ONE HUNDRED 💈💯🧭🎺🪊🎷✍️🧨🚀☀️

LONDON. Lived here all my life. Not gigged here much lately, if at all, this year. New @mylessanko album out today I SEE MY LIGHT. An absolute pleasure recording the horn section (myself & @lumbersax) 🎺🎷 played together properly, live, and a few trumpet solos at my studio The Brass Shed. Back in June we had a day in the shed to get it all done, save for a few 🪊 overdubs & solos. Flugelhorn on one song done in an Air Bnb in Belgium. Its a wonderful record, full of bangers & beauty. Scroll for probably boring studio computer screen videos of the process & clips from the album, as I continue to fail at adequately documenting anything I do.
