A Common Bond: The Brick Journal

We’re looking forward to hosting a few artist programs with the MILL this coming month so stay tuned for details and please join us!!

First up is our 12:30-2:00 pm hybrid Artist Dialogue, on Sunday October 4th as part of the museum’s Woven Conversations series, made possible by The Onion Foundation. This conversation will feature artist voices from the exhibition and will be co-moderated by Sam Finkelstein and Alexis Iammarino.

A Common Bond: The Brick Journal
On view through Sunday, October 25th.
At One Beech St. in Lewiston, ME.

A Common Bond: The Brick Journal is the inaugural exhibition for the museum’s new rotating gallery. Guest curated by Alexis Iammarino, the exhibit showcases the collaborative publication which gives its attention to brick. The exhibit reflects the museum’s broader mission to connect art, history, industry, and community through exhibitions rooted in the stories and materials of Maine.

Sam Finkelstein lives and works in Rockland, ME. Sam considers their daily practices as collaborations with Geologic Time. The objects Sam creates iterate another lifecycle in the sequence of boulders birthed by mountains, and mountains birthed by the primordial magma flowing beneath Earth’s crust.

Through forms inspired by planetary bodies, traditional folk-carving, and contemporary technologies, Sam’s hope is to reorient the general perception of raw materials towards one of reverence rather than of resource.

Some of what I’ve been working on the last stretch . Most of the material was hauled back from a road trip I took out west a couple winters ago . I was often looping back on the interstate to pull refuse off the shoulder ( road kill , blown out tires , etc.) and picking through scrap piles at stone suppliers .

Since that trip I’ve been thinking a lot about holes — that for most manufactured / processed goods , there are corresponding holes somewhere on Earth for the materials used to comprise an object in space ; that we can have our holes filled for pleasure, be filled with holes by violence , or use them to respire and expire . We are porous ; the universe is energy vibrating — mostly gaps between particles , nothing touching ; there are holes that amplify sound and those that absorb it .

Intrinsically tied to this all is the fact that many of the beautiful things we get to have not only come at the expense of raw resource being extracted from one location for the benefit of another, but also at the expense of human well-being that Consumers conveniently put out of mind for the sake of Convenience .

It’s overwhelming to think about solutions , but I think at least important to pay attention to as we enter the age of A.i. , where abstracted, intangible “intelligence” dominates conversation despite the very concrete material resources being pulled from the earth by exploited labor in order to generate , process , and store this intelligent “cloud” of information.

Grateful to Lucy Lippard and Max Stocklosa for writing kindred texts (“Undermining” and “Rocks According To Their Size” respectively) to think alongside. Eager to chat with people thinking about this stuff / read more books if anyone has recs 🙏🏻 by @samfink

With summer finally here I’ve been reflecting on the stiff blue cold of winter . Feels like a lifetime ago .

“Lovers (9)” was carved out of an 8ft , 1000 lb. block of granite . I was interested in the idea of ~bending~ stone , and curious about what it might be like for opposite ends of a block to meet. The unwieldy , sturdy yet delicate nature of the process felt apt when thinking about the relational dynamics between the links . 9 granite chain links all connected , about 20 inches long and 3.5” diameter each by @samfink
