For as long as I can remember, I've been fascinated, obsessed even with Route 66. Maybe it's because of my equally deep and abiding love for mid-century modern era and the Googie design elements Route 66 roadside signs and attractions are known for. Maybe it's the way it symbolizes the call of the open road, beckoning to me as though I were a modern Kerouac or a Hunter S. Thompson with far fewer drugs (these days). Maybe it's the history, the ghosts of all those who traveled the Mother Road in search of new adventures, new starts. Or maybe it's just a longing for simpler times. All I know is, it's called to me my whole life but somehow I never made it there. Until this past weekend. Once I knew we were going to Tulsa, the Capital of Route 66, I knew I'd finally get to drive that road. We stayed at a true Route 66 motel, built in the 50s. And though our trip was short, I was able to drive us from Tulsa to Oklahoma City on Route 66. Yes I shed tears, more than once. The fulfillment of a lifelong dream will do that to you for sure. Driving Route 66 with my soulmate by my side settled something in my soul that had been unsatisfied since before I was born. I felt the beauty of my surroundings and the call of the past cleanse my spirit. And on that road, the road that gave birth to the classic American road trip, I thought back on all the road trips of my childhood, and I knew I was carrying my mom and dad with me and I could feel their love for me and their happiness to see me fulfilling my promise to them, to be happy and to lead a beautiful life. Anyway that's just my long and sentimental way of saying, it was trip of a lifetime and I can't wait to go back and I can't wait to explore more parts of Route 66 πŸ–€ #route66 #roadtrip #theyhaveaverylovelylife by @samguine

Road trip to catch GCW in Dallas and Tulsa this weekend ✨ Drove up to Dallas on Saturday, checked into a motel, went to the show, tried to get Waffle House after but had to get it delivered instead. Got up Sunday, headed to Tulsa, checked into the motel (a vintage motel on Route 66, yes I was shaking with excitement and shed a few tears), drove over to the show in Broken Arrow, grabbed a bite at Telly's, cruised around a little then headed back to the motel. Monday we got up and took Route 66 from Tulsa to Oklahoma City which was indescribably amazing. We were on a bit of a time crunch having to be back Tuesday morning so we didn't get to stop at everything but it was amazing just getting to be on the road and see the sights and make a few stops. We reached OKC then headed back towards home. Planned to stop for an hour or so at Winstar but we decided to stay the night instead which meant we got up at 4am Tuesday to drive back into San Antonio. It was an amazing, magical weekend filled with so much fun, wrestlingz meeting cool people, seeing cool sights, and making the most incredible memories. It also made me feel so close to my parents - we used to go on road trips together and I very much felt their presence. The stop at Winstar was because of them - we used to visit casinos together but I never got to go to this one with them when they went. Stopping somewhere I know they visited was a moving experience and I ended up sobbing in the bathroom missing them more than I have probably since they passed, but soon I was smiling again, knowing I was walking in a place they walked and having fun somewhere they had so much fun too.The best part was experiencing it all with my person by my side. Having someone who doesn't just accept my sense of whimsy and adventure, my spontaneous nature and my deep sense of sentimentality - but appreciates and loves me even more for them; who is always down for an adventure with me; who cares about the things I care about because I care about them - I never knew I could feel so understood, so seen, so appreciated, so completely loved, before him and I'm just so damn lucky to have these adventures and do life with my soulmateπŸ«€ by @samguine

Damn, I can't believe it's the second Father's Day since you've been gone. Somehow I'm both sadder and less sad than I thought I would be today. These days, it doesn't feel like you're really gone. It's more like you moved away and are just bad at texting or something. Like you're still part of my life and this world. I talk to you a lot, you and Mom, and I know you hear me. I can still hear you both too. On the days it gets too hard, I ask you for a hug and I can feel you both put your arms around me and for just a second I can almost smell you both. These things make it a lot easier and I'm so thankful to have your love still with me. But there are still times where the pain creeps up on me and grabs me and for a few moments I can't breathe and I can't make sense of being in a world where you are not and the weight of missing you is unbearable. And I'll cry and sometimes I'll howl and whimper and then when my cries calm down and I can find a breath again, I hear your voice telling me "I'm still here, Tooter" and I know you are, and the world stops its out of control spinning and then grief becomes bearable again and I smile because how lucky am I to have a father who's still taking care of me from beyond this mortal plane. Thank you, for filling my life with love and laughter, for showing me what it means to be a good person, for teaching me to stand up for myself and for others, for always believing in me and seeing the very best in me. Thank you for being the best father and best friend anyone has ever had. I love you high as the sky, forever and for always. Hug Mama and Murphy and the cats for me.
