Almost a year ago I got a phone call telling me my twin sister had been airlifted to hospital after flipping her car and her brain copping a bad beating. From the hospital Bea called me close to 40 times, each time forgetting that she had just called me, which is easily the most terrifying thing I’ve ever experienced, if not for the fact I could land the same joke and get a laugh every time. It became very obvious very quickly that Bea would need constant support and so moving back with me was what was decided would be best for her recovery. It is hard define how a brain injury impacts a person and even though I know Bea better than I know myself, even I will never fully comprehend just how fucked it is. I can only form an understanding from watching the person I love the most struggle day in day out and not be able to do anything but rest to fix it. But if you know Bea you will also know there is no one else that would handle it with as much grace and positivity as her. I am truly in so much awe of her resilience, her attitude and her ability to still go up to boys and give them her number. She is still Bea and for that I am most thankful. This last year has been really, really tough. One I’ll admit now has also taken an enormous personal toll on me (my lifelong tough facade has finally been broken - asking for help is actually cool now). But it is also one that has shown me the silvers of joy that slip by unless you reach out and grab them. As I began to understand the sensitives like sound and light that would trigger Bea this really cool thing happened where I actually noticed senses more, like a crash course in being present. So much of this experience has been relearning that the small moments and gestures are what matter the most. That the meaning of a truly good friend. The check in messages, reserving the quiet tables and the intuition to pick up when the wheels were falling off never went unnoticed. Especially my roomies. I’ll never have the words to thank you guys enough. There is so much to be grateful for. I love you Bea 🤎 by @samhetho
