Some of the work at KITSCH | Art Bodega isn't on the wall. It's in the air. Hold up your phone, scan the marker, and watch the assemblage rebuild itself in three dimensions in front of you.

No app store. No headset. And after this week, no show. Last days at @NewportArtMuseum.

At The Global Gift Shop, the souvenir becomes the statement: small, numbered, archival works made to be owned, not just admired. @kitsch_art_bodega takes the museum store's logic of desire and turns it back on itself.

Organized by @shimartnetwork with @artpicscards and @alexandramas_artist, alongside @odettagallery, @hashtaggallery and @casa_lienzo.

Thank you, @newportartmuseum.

For handing over the Museum Store and letting it become a gallery, a bodega and an argument all at once. For stewarding over five hundred objects and more than three hundred idioms since May. For saying yes to a show that refuses to whisper.

KITSCH | Art Bodega closes at the end of the week. I'm grateful for every day it was open.

Sam Heydt’s work is on view now in PLAY / PRETEND at the Newport Art Museum. Her contribution, KITSCH | Art Bodega, is a site-specific environment sited in the Museum Store, with the Semiotic Table of Idioms, recycled-media assemblage, and augmented reality woven through.
KITSCH is an internationally itinerant pop-up concept space — previous iterations have appeared in Miami Beach, Newport, and Vienna. The Newport edition stages the museum store as the site of inquiry: where consumption, ideology, and aesthetics collide and become legible to the visitor.

The Semiotic Table of Idioms
A broken record. A fork in the road. The world’s tiniest violin.

The Semiotic Table of Idioms: more than 300 English idioms taken at their word, each rendered as a literal sculpture and filed into a periodic table. An autopsy of language itself.

On view at @newportartmuseum as part of Play / Pretend, through early November.

"The Global Gift Shop: The Radical Politics of Affordable Art" is on view in Venice through October 18, coinciding with this year's Biennale. Organized by @shimartnetwork.

Beyond my own contribution, the exhibition's Encapsulation installation brings together an international roster of artists curated by @shimartnetwork, @artpicscards, and @alexandramas_artist, with a wall presented by @odettagallery and another shared by @hashtaggallery and the resident artists of @casa_lienzo.

Grateful to be in such remarkable company.

KITSCH is open now at @NewportArtMuseum, part of PLAY / PRETEND. Sam Heydt’s site-specific contribution lives in the Museum Store — fine art beside functional design.

Heydt’s Semiotic Table of Idioms is in full force, along with AR installs. The shop is the gallery; the gallery was always a shop.

KITSCH has previously appeared in Miami Beach, Newport, and Vienna.
