Grant Nelson – Life (Discovery Mix)

One from Grant Nelson’s Swing City Records catalogue, released in 2005. The Discovery Mix leans into the disco side of his sound — filtered house, funky bass and a spoken-word element over a steady club groove.

A good example of the disco-house / filter-house crossover that was coming through strongly around this time. The groove does most of the work, with enough space in the arrangement to let it breathe in a DJ set.

Grant Nelson had been a major figure in UK house and garage long before this record, and Swing City was his own label, making this a pretty representative record of his sound around 2005.

I remember this kind of record being part of the Melbourne club sound around that period — funky, disco-influenced house that could sit comfortably alongside the more vocal and electro-leaning records in the box.

David Amo & Julio Navas – Alto Voltaje

One from the early days of Fresco Records, the Barcelona label founded by David Amo and Julio Navas in 2004.

Released in 2005, “Alto Voltaje” sits between electro house and progressive house — driving drums, a solid 128 BPM groove and that slightly darker, European club sound that defined a lot of the period.

The record was getting played by DJs across the European club circuit, with Lee Burridge dropping it in a 2005 set alongside records from Tiga, Zombie Nation, Adam Beyer and Sébastien Léger.

I remember this kind of sound finding its way into the Melbourne club scene around the mid-2000s — more underground than the big vocal house records, but still with enough energy to work in a busy club.

Axwell & Sebastian Ingrosso – Together 💿

One of the early records that helped define the mid-2000s Swedish house sound. Released in 2005 as Axtone 001, “Together” was the first release on Axwell’s Axtone label.

The original mix sits firmly in progressive house — rolling percussion, warm melodic layers and a steady 126 BPM groove. It has that slightly understated quality that made so many 2005 progressive records work so well in longer DJ sets.

Looking back, it’s interesting hearing Axwell and Ingrosso working together before the Swedish House Mafia era really took shape. This is the earlier, more progressive side of their sound.

I remember this kind of record being part of the Melbourne club sound around that period — progressive house gradually moving towards the bigger, more melodic sound that would become so prominent over the following few years.
