During my time in South Africa, we organised an art exhibition in a township called Masiphumelele, Cape Town.

I was fortunate enough to work with @projekt_ubuntu to organise the “Isazisi Kubugcisa Exhibition” (Xhosa for ‘Identity in Art’). The theme of this exhibition was ‘Identity’ and we wanted to explore the lives of artists from the Masiphumelele community through their art.

To have organised something like this in an underserved community to provide a platform for art and self expression, is something I will cherish forever. This was the first exhibition ever in Masiphumelele. What we have created here is only the beginning of a yearly tradition that will continue to grow and enrich the community for years to come. On the 27th of April at the Amakhaya Ngoku Hall in Masiphumelele, our Projekt Ubuntu Connekt team hosted a Freedom Day event to commemorate 30 years of our countries democracy; and the first post apartheid elections. Led by Project Coordinators Busisiwe Banda @baesick_b and Yonela Msutu @yonela_msutu who were supported by their Roots Interns; Samipya Bagde @damnitsamipya and Daphne Monden @daphnemnd who assisted with the co-ordination of this auspicious event. Our Freedom Day event was not only a celebration but also sought to activate and engage youth energy; to form part of our broader vision to inspire youth energy into a role of service and nation building. A very big warm thank you to our community of support @theproteaprojectcpt @rootsinterns @amyrosslind @bashthebeast @in2food_group in Kommetjie as well as Black Media for continuing to align and share in our mission and vision. Our MC Igwe Wabantu was engaging with the youth present at our event; and discussed what the meaning of Freedom day was; and what freedom meant to them. It was deeply insightful; inspiring and informative; and one began to realize the need for more such platforms to give voice to young people to express. Our program also included a talk and presentation by Avumile @iam_avumile_mahlati an Artist in Masiphumelele; followed by a Question and Answer by the youth. We also had a performing arts group from Masi; who entertained us with 2 incredible drumming performances; followed by a dance performance ; by youth dance crew called Akhoskhathi meaning “there’s no time” followed by incredible performance by Count of Eight; Basheer Moolman @bashthebeast & Amy Rosslind @amyrosslind .Our Projekt Ubuntu Connekt catering crew served Chicken a la King and baked goodies and treats sponsored by In2Foods Kommetjie. Guests were seated banquet style; to enjoy the delicious meal and festivities. Our day ended with all of us gatheriing outside for a group photo; before the skies broke with the sounds of thunder ( and lightening ) ; a blessing from the ancestors & God; for all the sacrifices of past. taken in Site 5 - Masiphumelele, Cape Town by @samipya.bagde

This was a special day because I had the luxury of celebrating it with my friends and family. I want to thank you all for the support, encouragement, knowledge and many great experiences during this degree. I was blessed with an amazingly talented cohort, educators who would go above and beyond for us, and wonderful friends who made everything infinitely better. Without a doubt, the friendships and connections I’ve made with people in these past few years will stay with me forever. And you best believe I will do everything to stay in touch with you all! by @samipya.bagde

I set out this year with two main goals: to create something cool as my final project and to form great friendships and connections that I will never forget. I am happy to report that I have achieved both :)

A huge thank you goes out to all of you who have been with me and supported me during my degree in numerous ways. Truly made my final year in this course as wonderful as it can get. I’ll miss you guys so much!
