I miss the good old days of The Blitz (our station's high school football highlight show), so it was great to again roam the sidelines of a Friday night football game.

Hispanic businesses in Grand Rapids are raising money through donation buckets for the family of Mario David Coronado Juarez.

"I feel like he deserves to go back to Guatemala," said Aileen Velasquez-Gonzalez, manager of Tienda Xela, a Guatemalan grocery store on Cesar Chavez Avenue. "He deserves to rest with his loved ones, his family deserves to say their last goodbyes." by @samlandstra

Family has identified the man who died in a car crash on Sunday after he fled from and attempted traffic stop conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Mario David Coronado Juarez, a husband and father of three, had been working construction jobs in Grand Rapids for more than five years, sending the money he earned back to his family in Guatemala.

Juarez, according to family, was undocumented.

On Wednesday, @cassandraalonsoo and I spoke with Juarez's wife, Masadonia, over the phone about the life her husband lived.

"He liked to work," said Masadonia, whose words have been translated from Spanish to English. "He liked to do his job. He would wake up early to do his job." by @samlandstra

Happy Sunday!

With Week One of the NFL season underway, I went back to the old stomping grounds to talk with Unity Christian head football coach Craig Tibbe about the success of two of his former players.

In 2018, when UCHS won its first ever state championship in football, a pair of future NFL players — Isaac TeSlaa and Hayden Large — were on its roster.

In 2026, the two are playing with the pros. by @samlandstra

Everyone's got stuff in their garage. Bicycles and baseballs. Tools. An old, rusty fridge that barely keeps the pop cold.

At the Grant household in Grand Rapids, the garage is fit with these sorts of things.

There's also a simple, live-saving assembly line.

"Wonderfully simple," says Rich Grant.

On Tuesday, Grant cut and stripped wires, fastened pieces of metal and soldered battery clips in the process of assembling chlorine production units — CPUs for short — as part of his work with Safe Water International Ministries (SWIM), a nonprofit that has helped provide clean drinking water to millions around the globe. by @samlandstra

The Michigan Emmys! I was nominated for three awards but did not win any of them, which means I am currently in my Timothée Chalamet era (perhaps this means the Pistons will win the NBA Finals next season). Very proud of the work of our station. My coworkers are the greatest and deserving of all the recognition. taken in The Fillmore Detroit by @samlandstra
