waking up at 4.30am on a Sunday morning was a small price to pay for the first ride on the CRL and the new East-West line. The train was packed with people, eager to see the result of ten years of construction. There was music, dancing, and much laughter (and coffee). A small fire at Waitemata Station caused a few headaches, but after that was resolved, things returned to normal. The stations are incredible and something Auckland should be incredibly proud of.

It is hard to overstate the benefits that the CRL will bring Auckland - including over $11B in economic benefits and of course, the transformative effects it is having around the stations themselves. It doubles the rail capacity of Auckland and is now part of Auckland’s rapid transit network, something that did not exist 25 years ago. Travelling from home this morning, the train journey was almost 15 minutes shorter than it was yesterday, and for outer suburbs, the savings will be even greater - it is as transformative to Auckland as the opening of the Auckland Harbour Bridge was in 1959.

Ultimately, transport projects are due to political decisions and it is through the leadership of Len Brown that the CRL got over the line. Unfortunately, rather than building on the momentum of the CRL, it is clear that Labour and National do not have the skills or the imagination to deliver projects that Auckland needs moving into the future - both parties have completely dropped the ball when it comes to Auckland’s transport requirements for the coming decades. Projects like Auckland Light Rail and Northwest Rapid Transit are no-brainers and should be underway, instead of being kicked down the can.
