Forever grateful for the wonderful man, dad, and best friend who taught me how to live 🥹

Two years since his condition deteriorated and he was airlifted to Sydney, a time that still brings up some tough memories and big waves of grief.
I’ve learned that love and grief are deeply intertwined, and the depth of one only exists because of the other. 💛

Sending love to anyone navigating loss today. You’re not alone. 💕 by @sammiegaul

NZ season highlights!🥝 a short & sweet & inconsistent one with the weather 🌦️ but feeling oh so grateful for the people who helped me with training, accom, and helped it make it all happen for me. Couldn’t do it without your support!🫵🏼

It was so much fun and great prep for the season ahead, and I feel like I made the most out of everyday. So special to be back in this beautiful country doing what I love after being injured last season!🫶

I’m really excited to announce the start of the Kieren Gaul Thredbo Ski Racing Club Spirit Award! 🥹🏆

The award goes to an athlete who works hard and has a desire to improve, stays positive, is a great teammate, and has a genuine love of skiing and the mountains. It’s for someone who embodies those qualities and the spirit of TSRC, and the coaching team decides who receives it each year.

Dad’s life passion was skiing, and it was shaped by his time at TSRC. He was a TSRC athlete first, then a speed skier on the National Team, then a powder ski guide and ski instructor, and later a TSRC parent and volunteer. He’s the reason I fell in love with skiing too.

This one is special to my family and me. The idea has been a few years in the making after dad passed from cancer, while we looked for an organisation that aligned with his qualities and his life, and TSRC’s mission and our family’s involvement with it, spanning from my grandparents, to my dad, to me, aligned so well.

I’m not actually involved in choosing who gets it, so I was completely surprised to hear I’d won it in its inaugural year 😳😂 I felt so honoured and chuffed too, and I’m excited to grow the award next year and support the next generation of Aussie ski racers at TSRC who carry the spirit and energy Dad had through a prize and some recognition✨

Dad’s early days ski racing!

Early morning sessions💛

Slalom on World Cup! (where they actually had a @fisalpine World cup one year, bring it back!)

And a training session with @skiing_hot_pow and @olithelyon on Ballroom pre NZ, massive thanks and big love to my TSRC family for all the support this season ❤️❤️❤️ taken in Thredbo Resort by @sammiegaul

Father’s Days took on a new meaning for me 2+ years ago, when I had just turned 22 and had to say goodbye to my dad and best friend after his 3 year battle with stage 4 bowel cancer. And since then these sorts of days have been tough.

Lots about him I kept to myself, but through time I find sharing more about his spirit keeps him alive.

I was talking to a friend recently who had also lost her dad at an early age and we exchanged funny stories of our crazy fathers; everyone is different when it comes to grief but I find it so meaningful to share. So here’s some of mine:

- I could ski before I could walk or talk properly, thanks to Dad who put me on skis when I was 1 at Thredbo

- Dad had a printed book of dad/ski guide jokes that he thoroughly researched

- He coined the term ‘social courage’ for my sisters and I basically to call people on the phone, or do things out of our comfort zone

- Dad would befriend backpackers who he met out surfing and invite them to our house for dinner

-At every big holiday we would have an extra seat at the table open to someone either far away from home, or navigating things like divorce; as dad didn’t want them to feel lonely

- At birthdays when we were young we would do treasure hunts for candy, using avalanche transceivers

- Dad was a fiercely competitive hardworker. He taught me work ethic. When I chose I wanted to be better at something he would do it with me. So I spent hours perfecting my penalty kicks and soccer skills, he would come on a bike behind me while I did my running intervals, we would do roller blading ski courses and obstacle courses together, and we even made a homemade pull up bar and permanent cemented in posts for a slackline when I was 13.

- I get random people still coming up to me all over the world saying they had the best day of their life skiing with him

- If you ever went powder skiing with him, you probably would’ve heard the words ‘awesome’ and ‘team’. And probably in the same sentence! Dad always believed skiing, much like life, is a team sport, and that relationships gave more richness in life. He was stoked on life and all it had to offer
Love and miss you this Father’s Day KG💛 by @sammiegaul
