With a heavy heart, and through tears, I must sadly inform you that Maxi passed away suddenly last evening. 🌈💔

On Friday, we still had a vet appointment for a blood work check, during which all his kidney values were stable and his red blood cells were being produced normally again. He was active, cuddly, and eating well.

Yesterday he was doing fine, ate some food, and then went outside again. 1.5 hours later, I took Leia outside and found him. He was just lying there, with no injuries, and he was still warm. Probably a heart attack or something 💔

His brother Sammy and his dog sister Leia were able to say goodbye to him. We’re now waiting for our boy to come home again.

Still in shock, not ready for this. My Soulcat I miss you 🐾💔

My sweet little boy Maxi is home again. 🌈🐾

Maxi was my soulmate, my little big boy. Something inside me is broken; I just miss him so much. In the morning when we brush our teeth, we no longer have his tail in our faces, his “stinky eye” when something didn’t suit him, his loud purring when he snuggled up to us, his peaceful face while he slept... 💔

Thank you all for your sympathy. We’ve seen all your messages, DMs, Stories, and posts. Our hearts are deeply touched to see just how much Maxi was loved. 💖

We’ll continue to be less active here—on the one hand, it feels like we’re being caught up in it all, but on the other, it hurts so much.💕🐾

First of all, thank you so much for your messages and get-well wishes!! That means a lot to us. 💖

Maxi Update: The last few weeks have been a rollercoaster. We decided to bring forward his latest blood work because Maxi suddenly started shaking over the weekend. His levels are “stable,” but his calcium is too low and his phosphorus is too high. 🐾

Unfortunately, he completely refuses to eat wet kidney food. Luckily, we’ve found a dry food that he really likes.

In the meantime, we’ve switched two of his medications to powder form to spare Maxi the stress of having to put everything in his mouth—and to help with the taste.

Maxi has made significant progress this week 💪 he’s been eating much more over the last few days and has even gained 0.4 kg. 🤞 We’re hoping that by next Friday, his levels will have improved.

Update on Maxi: His eyes are getting better, and his medication has been reduced. His next checkup isn’t for another 2 weeks.

His blood test results have all improved as well: creatinine from 5 to 4, hematocrit from 17% to 20%. No more bladder infection and no more fever. Things are moving in the right direction. His medication has also been adjusted. The next checkup isn’t for another 2 weeks. Now he just needs to start eating properly.

Unfortunately, the medication that’s supposed to stimulate his appetite is having the opposite effect. He’s now just as picky about food as before, but he’s wide awake. Still, he remains our little work in progress, our source of worry.

Maxi Update: Maxi has been back home since Sunday. 😻

On Thursday, we had a follow-up appointment at the eye clinic; things are looking good there. Hopefully, we’ll have the final checkup next Thursday. 🤞

On Friday, it was time for the blood tests. Unfortunately, his creatinine is at 5; last Friday it was 4.4. His hematocrit (blood clotting) should be around 33%, but it’s now at 17%—much too low, indicating anemia. He also has a bladder infection and a fever. 😿

Maxi is still considered an emergency case, and frequent (once a week) blood tests are required. 🙏

However, he looks better than the test results would suggest. He’s active, eating and drinking well, and has even gained weight. 💪

Maxi Update: Maxi barely ate anything—if at all—on Wednesday evening and Thursday morning. He was hungry but didn’t want to eat. So we drove back to the clinic, and he was admitted as a precaution because he also had a fever.

On Friday, we got all the test results: His kidney function—specifically, his creatinine level—is 4.4, which is even lower than when he was discharged. He no longer has a fever. 💪

However, his inflammation markers are high. It’s suspected that he has some kind of cat cold, since he has a bit of purulent eye discharge and a crusty nose. Since he has chronic kidney disease, his immune system just isn’t very strong.

Maxi is in good spirits, though—he’s purring and cuddling with everyone.

When I visited, he gave me a stinky side-eye because I’d woken him up from his beauty sleep. 😂🤷‍♀️

Today we’re celebrating Sammy and Maxi’s 12th birthday. 🍾🎂

Unfortunately, Sammy has to celebrate alone. Maxi has been at the animal hospital since Wednesday evening. He had suddenly lost a lot of weight.

His circulation was very poor, he was dehydrated, and his kidney values were very low. In the meantime, his kidney function has improved thanks to IV therapy; he’s eating well, maintaining his weight, and cuddling with the staff. 💪

However, he still has to stay at the clinic until his kidney function stabilizes even without the IV. We visit him every day, but unfortunately we can’t today. But Maxi will get his birthday meal tomorrow, and we’ll have a belated celebration with both of them as soon as he’s back home.
