There's this one school assembly I still remember pretty clearly - from around 25 years ago 🙃

A teacher walked out onto the stage, super flustered ..

"Sorry, I umm .. I thought this was next week. I don't have anything prepared."

He paused. It's awkward ..
Uncomfortable 😬

.. He then swiftly jumped off the stage, and ran towards the exit sign.

Maybe 20 seconds later, he's back - notes in hand, and a spring in his step.

His talk was about preparation - the whole thing was staged 🙄

Every other assembly is a complete blur, and was almost certainly a waste of time, but I can still see this one teacher stood on stage in a blind panic ..

He didn't just stand there, and tell us to 'be prepared' .. He had everyone sitting there, feeling his awkward embarrassment.

So 25 years later, I try to approach everything with at least an attempt at being prepared, because the alternative - chaos, and that level of red-faced embarrassment .. 'It's gonna be a no from me, dawg!'

Baz Luhrmann told the class of '99 to wear sunscreen. I disagree .. You need to be stretching.

I hit 40 a couple of years ago, and mentally, I felt pretty ready - maybe even a little excited. Your 40s are supposed to be this sweet spot of experience and capability finally catching up with each other - however - my body did not get that memo 😣

It turns out when you're in your 40s, coughing wrong can send you crashing into 2 weeks of moving like you're 70 🙄

So .. I stretch. 10 minutes, 3 times a day. I still ache, but I can function, and I hobble way less!

It's not going to make you a better creative, but it will keep you creating. And you can have all the taste in the world, but that won't save you if you can't sit at your desk in some kind of comfort.

.. I'm just saying - trust me on the stretching.

I blame Tetris for my organisational obsession. I don't mean in some clever, metaphorical kind of way - literally, Tetris.

I've played it most of my life .. Hours, and hours have been lost since I was 9 or 10 years old, huddled in the back of a red Volvo Estate, button bashing on my brother's Gameboy - building patterns, and solving problems, constantly trying to think ahead.

.. This follows me everywhere, especially After Effects. The first thing I do is start [or fix] the file structure .. Not out of some kind of virtue, but because three weeks from now I know a client's going to be wanting a couple of quick tweaks, and I definitely prefer to have built that flexibility upfront than be rushing, tearing everything apart as the clock runs down.

I'm dealing with 'Tetris brain' all day, everyday 😬

Wrestling's taught me something crucial with motion design - hear me out ..

The Rock, the People's Champ, taking Stone Cold's Stunner .. The launching backwards, almost clearing the ring - that dramatic, explosive reaction is the sell. It transformed a simple move into one of the most devastating moves in alllll of sports entertainment.

Same principle applies with animation - the secondary motion sells the primary action .. A screen shake, text reacting to the impact .. These little details give weight to the work.

.. And without a sell, even the best animation falls flat.
