CAW! Corvid-lovers took over Lake Harriet’s picnic grounds on Saturday. @sammylett organized the event to honor our local crows, who are “as smart as 7-year-old human children.” Attendees came in their finest crow regalia, brought shiny trinkets to trade, and even competed in a crow-call competition. It is with profound sadness that I must share the Nest is no longer with us.

The Nest was more than just a massive agglomeration of hexagonal paper combs surrounded by a thick, multilayered outer shell. It was also a symbol of community, and a monument to the power of collective effort.

The Nest wasn’t built by one wasp in one day. It was built by hundreds of wasps working over the course of months, devoting their entire lives to this collaborative project.

The Nest showed us what can happen when numerous beings come together to create something greater than themselves. Its beauty reminded us of what can be achieved when we are all united towards a common goal, something the people of Minneapolis understand very well. In that sense, the Nest was a physical embodiment of community.

During its short time in the Lyndale Park Rose Garden, the Nest served as a gathering place, not only for the bald-faced hornets who called it home and who pollinated the flowers in its vicinity, but also for the countless curious onlookers who came to appreciate its majesty. Whether they made the pilgrimage deliberately or stumbled upon it incidentally, all who gazed upon the Nest left with their capacity for awe heightened, their appreciation for nature enhanced.

While its physical presence in our park has come to an end, the spirit of the Nest will live on forever in our hearts.

Rest in peace, Nest. We will never forget you. taken in Lyndale Park Rose Garden by @sammylett
