Throwback Thursday takes us back to Mikhail Kalashnikov admiring the vz. 58.

Rumor has it, he always believed the vz. 58 to be a better rifle than the AK-47! šŸ˜† by @samopalusa

Mix-it-up Monday brings you the Yugoslavian M53 machine gun on the tripod.

ā›”ļøNOT FOR SALEā›”ļø

The 8mm caliber M53 is a copy of the German MG42 and I welded this M53 together from a parts kit a few years ago. I have an FFL with SOT so I can legally do this.

The tripod is the Yugoslavian version of the German MG42 Lafette mount. It’s absolutely rock solid when shooting!

Notice that it is shooting in .308.

A German MG3 barrel, barrel sleeve, booster and feed tray with top cover is used for the caliber conversion. by @samopalusa

Sighting-in vz. 58s and snuck in a vz. 61 too. Photo taken yesterday.

ā›”NOT FOR SALEā›”

As always, every customer receives a target and a build letter confirming your vz. 58 and/or vz. 61 was built by Samopal.

I’m enjoying the cooler temperatures. It’s nice not having my glasses fog up with sweat running down the lenses! šŸ˜† by @samopalusa

Throwback Thursday takes us to SHOT Show 2009 in Orlando, Florida with Gunny R. Lee Ermey and me posing for a photo. Hard to believe it’s been 17 years now!

My buddy took the photo with his flip phone. As you can see, it’s in glorious 144p hi-res with crystal-clear focus! šŸ˜‚

I attended SHOT Show representing CzechPoint and saw Gunny at the GLOCK booth. I’ve always been a fan of his and had the chance to speak with him and get an autograph.

Really great guy and was awesome to chat with him! His autograph hangs on the wall above my shop desk.

I added some pics from the ā€œFull Metal Jacketā€ movie. Of course, the best part of the movie is the recruit training! by @samopalusa

Mix-it-up Monday brings you an M3A1 Grease Gun re-weld submachine gun!

ā›”NOT FOR SALEā›”

I posted this a few years back, but this post has many more photos and provides additional details on the re-weld.

M3A1 Grease Gun post sample details:

* Parts kit was cut through the receiver in three places, including trunnion threads.

* Turned threads (16 TPI) on piece of aluminum tube (1.75 inch O.D.) to serve as a jig for trunnion TIG welding.

* Used a piece of steel round bar (turned down on the lathe) to fit inside the trunnion jig for heat sink and to help prevent shrinkage. It will shrink!!! I had to hammer out the steel using a wood dowel and cut the aluminum out.

* Turned down 1.75 inch O.D. aluminum tube to 1.65 inch O.D. to fit inside the receiver pieces.

* Cut 1.65 inch tube in half to be used with two small muffler pipe expanders (Small expander size 1-1/8ā€ to 1-3/4ā€).

* Aluminum tube halves with muffle pipe expanders keep the receiver pieces aligned while TIG welding. Won’t prevent warpage - be careful!!

* If an rubber O-ring on the expander melts, get the variety size O-ring kit from Harbor Freight for replacements. Kit is approximately $5.00.

* As with all of my re-welds, I spot weld a couple of areas at a time and let cool by fan. Countless spot welds are done to eventually connect all spot welds together.

* Copper pieces used in the flat areas for a heat sink backing plate. Feeler gauges used to maintain gaps during TIG welding.

* Weld clean-up was accomplished using table grinder, drum sander, Dremel rotary tool, 3/8 belt sander, needle files and regular files, and Emery Cloth. Many hours were spent cleaning up the welds!

* Refinished in a Cerakote mix going for a parkerized look. Used Sniper Grey and Armor Black colors for the mix.

This Grease Gun is an absolute blast to shoot and reminds me of ā€˜Apple Cobbler’ and ā€˜Apple Pie’. If you know what I’m referring to, leave a comment! by @samopalusa

Pics of a CSA vz. 58 rifle that was sent in for the Enhanced Trigger job.

I thought I’d show some close-ups of a tactical bolt release and magazine release, along with other pictures. The magazine release is by Zendl; I’m not sure of the bolt release manufacturer.

As a right hander with this setup, you can release the magazine and bolt using only your index finger. This is a great option for those wanting the quickest reload possible.

There are a few tactical bolt releases on the market and many require modification so their protrusion does not damage both the bolt release and the bolt.

This one was no exception and I had to shorten the bolt release’s height (its protrusion from the receiver rail) and polish burrs/impact marks on the bolt and even the bolt carrier. All good now and ready to go!

Additional note: Look closely at the magazine catch pin safety pin. This is a Liberty Model rifle from which the magazine block and 10 round magazine had been removed.

Not shown: inside the receiver is a sliding plate that traps the safety pin and that requires removing the receiver cover and the bolt carrier group to access this safety pin.

Removing the safety pin allows removal of the magazine block and magazine. In other words, this rifle, with the magazine block and 10 round magazine attached is compliant in NY, CT, NJ, CA and other states with rifle restrictions.

I’m the author on two approved patents for this vz. 58 receiver. I designed it while working at CzechPoint and collaborated with Czech Small Arms to make it a reality. Lots of satisfaction designing it because I lived in California for over a decade and know what it’s like to live in a restricted state. by @samopalusa

Throwback Thursday takes you to 1977 with the Sa vz. 58 ā€œKlecĢŒā€ prototype.

ā›”NOT FOR SALEā›”

This prototype was designed as an experimental light machine gun variant of the vz. 58. The Czechoslovak version of the Russian RPK.

Photos taken at the Military History Institute Prague @vhupraha where I inspected and photographed it several years ago. It’s an amazing museum and I highly recommend visiting!

vz. 58 ā€œKlecĢŒā€ Prototype details:

* Development, testing and evaluation took place from 1976 to 1979.

* 9 total prototypes were built (3 with standard rifling and 6 with polygonal rifling).
Barrel is 590 mm (23.20 inch) barrel, which is roughly 20 cm longer (7.87 inch) than the standard vz. 58 rifle barrel.

* Buttstock made of beech wood.

* Bipod used is from the vz. 58 Pi which is the night vision model.

* Basically, this is a regular vz. 58 rifle with a longer barrel and RPK style buttstock.

* Polygonal rifling showed no real improvement in accuracy or wear compared to the standard rifling.

* At the end of testing, it was found that the ā€œKlecĢŒā€ prototype did not offer much of an advantage over the standard vz. 58 rifle and the program was cancelled.

A very cool piece of vz. 58 design history! by @samopalusa
