What if a traditional Thali could be made modern without loosing its meaning? 🧡

When Mithila came to me, she had a beautiful vision for her Vadakalai Tamil Thali , to preserve the deep symbolism and traditional elements, while creating a piece she could actually wear every day.

She shared photos of her existing Thali, and we began the process of reimagining it.
The U-shaped Namam, Sangu (Conch), and Chakra (Discus) were especially important to her, so we made sure every engraving was crisp and beautifully defined.

One of my favorite details is the adjustable chain, allowing the Thali to be worn anywhere from approximately 16" to 22–24" longer over the chest or shortened for different outfits and everyday life.

The entire custom Thali design process took about a month, with so many little details considered along the way.
And then came the best part: her review. ❤️Truely made my day :)

Seeing her so happy with something we created together is honestly why we do what we do.

I’m constantly amazed by the depth of meaning and symbolism within South Indian traditions. I feel incredibly lucky to be able to preserve that heritage while making it beautiful, desirable, and wearable for today’s bride.

Because modernizing tradition doesn't mean losing its meaning.

It means giving that meaning a new way to live.

It’s truly incredible to see how our thaali mangalsutras are made at Sampati. Every piece is handcrafted to preserve the artistry, authenticity, and quality of this beautiful tradition.

I had the chance to sit down with Shekhar Anna, one of the talented artisans who brings our thaalis to life. His wife made us some delicious chai, and over a cup, he shared stories about his craft and why he loves what he does.

Something he shared really touched my heart. ❤️

Thousands of years ago, before digital scales existed, gem traders needed a way to weigh precious gemstones. Carob seeds became associated with this ancient weighing practice because they were believed to have a relatively consistent weight.

🙌But here’s the interesting part: carob seeds don’t all weigh exactly the same!

Today, diamond weight is standardized and measured with precision.

Sacred doesn’t have to be bulky. ✨

We wanted to create a South Indian Thali that felt traditional, but delicate enough to wear every day.

Keeping the familiar Bottu beads, coral, and Thali motifs, we brought all the elements together in a way that feels cohesive and effortless.

The dual-tone chain adds a little modern character, while the citrine gemstone brings in the warmth of coral and a beautiful pop of sparkle.

I asked myself a simple question:
Why should a symbol of marriage ever need to be hidden?

The Mangalsutra carries centuries of culture, meaning, and stories. Across South India, every thali has its own symbolism and significance , I believed it deserved to be celebrated, not tucked away.

So I set out to create modern Mangalsutras for today’s bride.

Thalis that honor tradition while fitting effortlessly into modern life. Pieces you can wear to brunch, to work, on date nights, during celebrations, on vacation and everywhere in between.

After designing so many thalis, I realized this has never really been about the jewelry itself.

🙌It’s about expression. Identity. Culture. And choice.

Because you should never have to choose between your culture and your style.

This Janmashtami, I wanted to share a concept that beautifully embodies the spirit of Lord Krishna:

“Lila” the cosmic play💛

To me, Lila is the art of detachment 🤍the ability to feel deeply without allowing every emotion to define you. To stay fully connected to life, while understanding that everything is part of a larger, ever-changing play.

She loved the design but She just didn’t want a generic diamond pendant. 💎

I had a heart-to-heart conversation with my client about what she really wanted from her custom jewelry.

She loved the style and inspiration, but she didn’t want a pendant that looked mass-produced or something she could easily find at a big-box retailer.

What I heard was simple:

She wanted the style she loved, but with a soul of its own.
We also discussed lab-grown vs. natural diamonds. After talking through my perspective on long-term value and what I believe makes sense for a fine jewelry investment, she decided to go with natural GIA-certified diamonds.@giagrams

And then the real work began.

✌️💗For an entire month, we went through a rigorous custom jewelry design process: refining proportions, diamond placement, details, and the overall look until it felt right for her.

The final result is a custom diamond pendant inspired by a style she loved, but completely reimagined to feel personal and unique.

✨ Diamond details: • 0.32 ct + 0.50 ct center natural diamonds | Total 1.27 cts • H color, VVS1 clarity, Excellent cut • GIA certified 
This is why I believe custom jewelry is so special.
