Sam Photic - Mist 001

The first in a new series from Sam Photic. This live large scale experimental installation was undertaken at Ashley Court during early September 2026. The artist removed the conventional safety net of studio development behind closed doors to expose their artistic raw process and vulnerabilities. What emerged is a piece requiring sensitivity, timing and a great awareness for the natural world. As is often thematic in Sam’s work, the installation reacts to and engages with the instant gratification culture of technological revolution and similarly to experiencing shooting stars, sunrises and sunsets, viewers were encouraged to time their visits carefully and tune in with mother nature. In creating this as a broader series the artist hopes to raise questions of human intervention in nature and the relationship between technology and the natural world.

Having the best time working with the wonderful multi talented Louis Brown @the_regal_tree_company preparing for Ashley Court @ashleycourtdevon

This year I decided to carry out a large scale experiment which may well fail completely, but with the high hopes it will help to learn and better understand the next piece I wish to create in this series. I’m pleased to confirm that I am already very much finding this is the case as I embark down this path. Given the scale and questioning I have whether others might enjoy the experience, I decided not to develop the work behind the safety of closed studio doors and to share the experience with everyone. Come along and experience the vulnerability of creativity, and even if I let you down the following amazing lot will have plenty of inspiration and visual splendour for you:

Power Rings.

In response to all the cruelty, unkindness, ruthlessness, intolerance, destruction and corruption we are seeing so much of in the news, I wanted to make something to help bring greater strength and confidence to the kinder, peace keeping and constructive people of the world. Jewellery felt a good platform for the dangers of tribalism.

The amazing multidisciplinary artist Stephanie Buttle @steph_buttle has created a really special exhibition seemingly out of nowhere in South Molton. It showcases art, ceramics, furniture, textiles and more from a variety of creatives. You might find some Sam Photic artworks and jewellery there too.

Open late night tomorrow (Friday 28th) for the Christmas lights event until 9pm, and Tuesday to Sunday 10am - 5pm. It’s in the basement of the excellent Gilbert Gallery @thegilbertgalleryuk (well worth checking out too) 138 East Street, South Molton, Devon.

The disappearing and reappearing element of Divide.

Divide 2025 is a large-scale sculptural installation formed across 130 metres of trees by careful bending and manipulation of branches by hand and securing them with over 800 metres of natural biodegradable rope. It reflects the human fabrication of divisions in global society whilst demonstrating that all is rooted in the same whole, and the division is reversible. Over time the cord will degrade and the divide will disintegrate and revert back to the whole, presenting an optimism for the future.
