AI does not close a skill gap. It widens the one that already exists.

At the CUASA seminar, Arc. Samuel Oluwafemi Lawal, Principal at Lines and Frames, put it plainly. If you do not know the fundamentals, AI will mislead you. It is an enhancer of what you already understand, not a substitute for understanding it.

The practitioner who knows why a detail works gets a faster version of their own judgement. The one who does not gets a confident answer they cannot evaluate. Same tool, opposite outcomes.
Which is why the advice at the end of the session was not about software. Learn the foundation, then recognise that the foundation travels further than consultancy. Design principles are the mechanics of development and spatial economics.

We asked Arc. Samuel Oluwafemi Lawal, Principal at Lines and Frames, whether AI is a bridge that closes the gap between school and practice, or whether it just widens the river for those who cannot keep up.

He did not accept that it closes anything.

His answer located the gap somewhere most of this conversation never looks. Design and communication are the two halves of the workflow, and communication means explaining your work to people who are not architects. Clients. Boards. Institutions. That is the part school does not drill, and it is the part no tool can do on your behalf, because you cannot explain what you do not understand.

Which is why he keeps returning to the basics. AI enhances what is already known. If the knowledge is not there, at best it misleads you.
