In my first semester at Southampton University, I attended business and entrepreneurship workshops where I learned about legal, finance, pitching, marketing, and branding.

Almost 10 years later, I was invited back to that same campus to deliver a workshop on storytelling as part of Southampton Business School’s ‘Talent Development Programme’.

For a long time, storytelling was mainly regarded as a technique for entertainment, like for films and stand-up comedy. But recently, it’s been widely regarded as an essential tool in the corporate space, for things like pitch decks and marketing.

In the workshop, I taught students about the art and utility of storytelling. We then delved into some practical uses of storytelling such as using it in networking environments and interviews.

A key piece of advice I gave to the students was to continue being proactive and curious. Because as a reminder, I was a film student, on a business campus, and this led me into a direction I never imagined. taken in Boldrewood Campus by @samuel.csv

Let me introduce you to the amazing industry experts that we had on the panel.

Jaimie D’Cruz is an Oscar-nominated producer known for Exit through the Gift Shop and more recently The Trouble With Mr. Doodle.

Jade Tan is a BAFTA member and the Director of Programming at Shorts TV. She’s known for her incredible work at Sky Cinema where she was previously Head of Planning.

Dr. Louis Bayman is a film critic and an Associate Professor at the University of Southampton. He holds a PhD from Kings College London and has 40+ publications.

We discussed their journey into the film space, film consumption, the power of film, and the future of film, then we opened it up to the audience. It was super interesting to hear their different perspectives due to their varied expertise. taken in The Soho Hotel by @samuel.csv
