New @bakk.heia.records incoming!

For our ninth offering we have ventured out of our small but fertile swamp in search of another source of magick. Meandering across boggy pastures new, we crossed paths with @steevio.suzybee , who sat hovering serenely in the fern covered shade of a nearby valley. Instantly recognising the singular vision of this fabled artist, we hastily gathered our nets and cast them under Steevio’s branches, capturing four beautiful offerings as they wriggled towards us. Upon the return to our mulch, it became clear that we could not contain Steevio’s creations, so wilful was their vitality. It was therefore all we could do to release them back to the universal dance from whence they came.

Steevio’s music reflects the universal moments where seemingly chaotic and disparate elements are suddenly revealed to be perfectly harmonious. Of course examples of this are always universally present in nature, and have been eternally, but we have to be reminded to appreciate them. In the same way that a wave deposits a perfect line of shells on a beach, dew freezes on grass, or individual strands of mycelial hyphae bind together to form incredible patterns, Steevio’s music is likewise; effortlessly considered. For us, it has more in common with the unrelenting flow of a river than it does with dance music. It is psychedelic music in the same sense that nature is intuitively psychedelic; without ever leaning into any tried tropes of what is culturally considered ‘psychedelic’ music.

MTV Music Week post

This past summer I had the pleasure of Collaborating with @wearepinksaltmilan and @mtvuk on creating the identity for MTV Music week which took place the following week in Manchester!

The illustrative approach celebrates the rich and varied heritage of Manchester, referencing different icons and scenes that make up some of this storied history. Through the work I wanted to highlight the sensory importance of music events within the cultural life of the city, something that has given me untold joy over the past 8 years living here (and a few sore headed mornings to boots), as communicated by the sensory flower motif. I also tried to get across the idea that, despite the often oppressive grey weather and, lets be honest, quite depressing surroundings the true colour of the city is created and sustained through the many creatives living and working here, a community that I feel privileged to contribute to in my own small way.

Many thanks to the good folks at Pink Salt and MTV for getting me involved, its definitely been a trip seeing my work up around this fine city!

The penultimate @bakk.heia.records party at that soon to be big garage in the sky The White Hotel!

Stacked line up with Amsterdam based dubbed out post punkers Devon Rexi headlining, with support from Floor Length Skirts mindbooglin’ record bag and friend of the family Elliot aka Roy Radiant having one last stab at the onion bag before it’s gone ! With of course our man on the inside Bitzer closing up shop.

As the summer sun begins to set on our beloved shite hotel, we gather again for Part 2 of our tenth year celebrations.

A sense of impending doom has pushed us to reflect on what it is that we have actually been doing all these years. When it’s all over, what will we have to show for it? As the end draws near, what kind of party would best articulate the message here? What does Bakk Heia mean anyway?

The answers all pointed towards throwing a party with the people who have built it from the start. The word ‘community’ seems to be having a moment in pop culture, but if you stripped back the layers, all this has ever been is an opportunity for us to share our weird records with our friends. If, along the way, that resulted in a few more folks receiving the message, and coming back for another glug from the eternal cup, then all the better. And if those people ended up becoming our friends, then maybe that is community?

So we will be playing all night, with an extended live set from our confectionary gobbling frog man.

Yours sincerely, thy faithful rave servants, forever in thy service, now and always.

Friends, join us as we once again sip from the eternal cup. The end is nigh, but maybe not THAT nigh 😉

10 years of @bakk.heia.records tonight! !!! 🐬

Eternal thanks to my brother @bitzer.malo for steering the good ship Bakkheia through the years, not always been an easy task in this turbulent nightlife landscape. Also very grateful to @schuttle_ and @jorg_kuning for their wonderful sets and label releases over the years that have helped define the sound of the party! And of course thanks to the many artists that have shared their music here, seen some of the best sets of life in that hallowed smoke, and shout out the cru without which there would be no party.

In celebration of this milestone I’ve selected my 10 favourite BH posters from over the years! A fitting time capsule of our lil corner of the rave scene in Manchester and also a document of how my work has progressed over the years. Swipe to see the first BH poster I made all those moons ago, certainly learned a thing or two since then. (Forgive the industrial loom drawing, I had just moved to Manchester was caught up in the postindustrial spirit of the place lol)

I always neglect the rejuvenating power of making personal work!

Something I don't do enough of, but a thing that really reminds you of sheer joy of creating for the sake of it. It does you good to pick your head out of the capitalist murk and shake off the shackles of the brief, setting pen to (digital) paper from time to time with no clear goal other than satisfaction.

Carrying on in the spirit of self indulgence here's some upcoming DJ gigs I'll be upending the contents of the bag at this summer.
