![This is my full review of Spud by John van de Ruit, it’s a long thing so i’ll publish the full text somewhere soon. Here, it’s divided across the different slides’ captions. Thanks for the Recommendation Rakhi, enjoy the long text.
————————————————————————————————————
On April 20th 2026 i was on a walk on Mexico City with my cousin when we entered a bookstore. It was my first time there (the store, not the city) and I had supposed it would be as much as a routine visit as any to any of the libraries that we had previously walked in (thank god his patience, because i like to take my time). The routine would consist of A) Entering, B) Walking every single aisle pointing out things, C) Revisiting the ones we pointed thongs out in and D) Leaving without actually purchasing anything. And to some degree that was exactly what happened then. Later, on April 26th 2026 i walked in and out for the second time having acquired the 2007 edition of Spud, which i had scouted on my first walk through. My very dear friend Rakhi had been LONG recommending me this book (along with the film, which i will get into later) and i had been looking for it online only to be met by astounding importation and shipping fees on otherwise decently priced books (i mean, still, above 1 mxn a page, but i won’t get into my personal ideal pricing systems here, though maybe some other time) or straight up outrageous book prices (above 2000 mxn [about 1917 rand] for a book just under 400 pages with shipping not included). So finding it on a Random bookshop on La Roma priced at 125 (which came to even less because i paid cash) was an immediate no brainer. HOWEVER, i did not buy it straight up because i still had to buy some concert tickets and i wasn’t sure of where I would be standing economically afterwards. Regardless, there i was a few days later walking out with Spud by John van de Ruit on my hands.
John both author and character are South African writers, both from the Durban area (a city which i’ve gotten to know at least partially because of several gorgeous pictures provided by my on-site reporter Rakhi). Van de Ruit studied at Michaelhouse, a boys-only boarding school, which serves as the s by @samuelcaneladls](https://scontent-phl2-1.cdninstagram.com/v/t51.82787-15/764693364_18091446506631373_7987506878233545300_n.jpg?stp=dst-jpg_e35_s640x640_tt6&_nc_cat=103&ccb=7-5&_nc_sid=18de74&efg=eyJlZmdfdGFnIjoiQ0FST1VTRUxfSVRFTS5iZXN0X2ltYWdlX3VybGdlbi5DMyJ9&_nc_ohc=4erHAk2nrcIQ7kNvwFDBYUG&_nc_oc=AdrgiGF6vIk71TsVO6gy5Ft-6YM0QUcNCI3faamo7CyVpc9F6ay53GDsW7tAxKlQUNNxRtvPMI8-Q_L944q8X0iP&_nc_zt=23&_nc_ht=scontent-phl2-1.cdninstagram.com&_nc_gid=TDEfEowD5BZoYIBdYgDMMg&_nc_ss=70689&oh=00_AQTZ-uY29arrnMRJHN2iLW4OU-VxnmXJH8PkQSsKO17QpQ&oe=6AF003CE)
