In 2018, the 7th Relating Systems Thinking and Design (RSD7) Conference was my very first scientific conference. My first steps into the international academic world, and my first steps into design for sustainable transitions. Today, eight years later, so many things have changed in extraordinary ways. And at the same conference, now in its 15th edition (RSD15) hosted by Politecnico di Torino, I had the wonderful opportunity to represent my new university, @tecdemonterrey and my new colleagues, presenting a project on interconnected microhabitats for multispecies urban ecologies, based on the selection of 12 local insect species and developed in the context of Distrito Tlalpan, Mexico City. A project that brought together expertise in Systemic Design, Multispecies and Non-Human Design, Graphic Communication, and Prototyping, thanks to the collaboration of a team composed of Gerardo Sandoval Osio, Miguel Angel Arjonz, Oscar Alejandro Miranda Martinez and 25 students from our school @eaad.tec Working in one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world, characterized by continuous urbanization and ecological degradation, is challenging. As designers, focusing on human needs is essential... but moving beyond a hierarchical and anthropocentric perspective is even more crucial, now more than ever. Protecting and enhancing biodiversity is far from simple. It represents a wicked problem, characterized by long timescales and the difficulty of immediately testing the effectiveness of any proposed solution. However, analyzing the complexity of the fragile ecological system we live in can help us better understand it and act accordingly, in a world where we can no longer talk about actions in the context of prevention, but rather in the context of an ecological emergency. But this project does not end here. With its real-world implementation at El Semillero Huerto Urbano Comunitario, in Distrito Tlalpan, we will work to monitor the conditions of the microhabitats and the insects through sensors, with the aim of quantifying the project's results in a tangible and measurable way, and progressively improving the developed model through an iterative design process. by @san_miris
