Water is something that connects all of us. This project felt quite personal to me because I grew up in a rural village where access to water wasn’t always easy. So I understand, in a very real way, how something as simple and essential as water can shape a community and the lives of the people within it. This also marks my directorial debut under @sanaafilms. The process felt some-what new, challenging, but also strangely familiar. I guess I’m still working with images… they’re just moving this time around 😊. A Village of Mothers is a celebration of the women who don’t just raise their own children, but carry an entire community.🤍 We grow up in the care of many women. Our grandmothers, aunts, sisters, cousins and neighbours who show up in countless ways, often without expecting anything in return. With this film, I wanted to turn the camera towards these women. This is my way of acknowledging them, appreciating them and celebrating the role they play in raising all of us. What a privilege to learn about the history of South African football through numbers. I had the honour of speaking to Bra Jomo Sono about the lineage of numbers. Before names on jerseys, there was the weight of a digit you had to live up to. A number meant everything, commentators would build nicknames around your jersey number. There’s a strong culture of retiring jersey numbers in honour of the greats, and that often sparks an uproar because some believe the legacy of the jersey should carry on, while others feel the talent and dedication must match those who came before.
