A History of India through Chairs - the Mural

Conceptualised by @vivekgandhiphotography for @mahendra_doshi_est_1974 - as a way to illustrate the evolution of aesthetics, design and craftsmanship in India through chairs. We also wanted to place these chairs in the context of the societal and cultural forces that shaped this very evolution and what better way than to hand paint a 43’ mural.

Central to this process was animator and illustrator, Sana Srinivasan @sananimator who designed and illustrated the sketch that was then scaled up, detailed and hand painted by the very talented Muralist Rudranee Chiman @rudranee_c taken in Mumbai, Maharashtra by @sananimator

“Purple and gold, the heraldic colours of the kind and queen of the meadow, a regal procession in complementary colours. I just wanted to know why.

Why do they stand beside each other when they could grow alone? Why this particular pair? What is the source of this pattern? Why is the world so beautiful?

It could be so easily otherwise: flowers could be ugly to us and still fulfil their own purpose. But they’re not. It seemed like a good question to me.

The question of goldenrod and asters was of course just emblematic of what I really wanted to know. It was an architecture of relationships that I yearned to understand. I wanted to see the shimmering threads that hold it all together - why the most ordinary scrap of meadow can rock us back on our heels in awe. And I wanted to know why we love the world.”

the last time I got to illustrate my oldest bestie and favourite human, I got to celebrate the beauty and joy she brought with her dancing.

this time, I got to illustrate @_aanchalanand and ishan for their wedding, and I couldn’t be happier.

Grace Banu is a tour de force. She is an activist, engineer, and one of India’s most prominent advocates fighting for the rights and dignity of the Dalit and transgender communities in India.

After years of campaigning by @gracebanu and the Trans Rights Now collective, which she heads, Grace helped establish the Manthithoppu Transgenders Milk Cooperative Society, India’s first cooperative society run entirely by transgender women.
