School expansion, Untereggen, 2025
The buildings are extended above an existing basement, framing a rediscovered schoolyard. Under the prolonged structure of the roof, the former facade becomes an interior wall. The spaces negotiate between continuity and transformation, classroom and workshop, outdoor and indoor.

Municipal administration Frutigen
A project by SANCHEZ MORGILLO

Frutigen is a village that lies at around 800 metres above sea level in the Bernese Oberland. The municipal administration is housed in two neighboring buildings connected at ground level: the traditional half-timbered „Rüeggerhuus“ and the post-war municipal building. When several regional departments were merged, additional space became necessary. The existing structure proved remarkably robust, allowing the preservation of nearly all the historic substance, with the exception of the roof. The staircase was extended and a lift was added to ensure full accessibility and vertical connection between offices. Initially, only a simple attic was planned beneath the new roof. However, the design team recognised the opportunity to create a multi-purpose space instead. This required a second round of planning approval but in the end the effort was worthwhile: a large, column-free room with a communal kitchen now crowns the building. It is a flexible space, open to unexpected uses, intentionally left with room to evolve. The extension covers nearly half the height of the façade and is constructed in timber, in contrast to the existing masonry. The plastered character of the original building was maintained while it was reinterpreted structurally. Toward the top, the solid appearance dissolves into clearly articulated elements: plastered panels mounted onto a fine grid of aluminium profiles. The construction remains legible in its individual components, expressing how it is assembled. Working with the existing building allowed the team to respond to what was already there, whether through a contemporary reinterpretation of the region’s traditional half-timbered construction or through subtle structural detailing. The vertical extension does not seek to stand apart; instead, it aims to feel familiar to residents. An architectural continuation rooted in place and shared identity. @sanchezmorgillo
