a night of encounter for Gen-Z / ALL are truly welcome

**many people come to an event like this hoping the music is solid, the teaching is interesting & little funny, there is oat milk for the coffee and on and on… but few come with an expectation to meet with GOD.

CELIBACY / a long caption for a very special day

one of the great privileges of being a pastor is the proximity you are given to people’s lives.

this month, i had the privilege of standing with hannah as she made a public vow of celibacy and consecrated her life to jesus in the presence of her church, family, and friends.

walking with her toward this day has meant more to me than i can easily say. watching her wrestle, discern, pray, build community, and finally stand before the church and offer her life to jesus was everything.

in some ways, this ceremony feels like the culmination of something i’ve been carrying for a long time: settling my own theology, helping build a community that can truly embrace people, and getting to know and learn from celibate queer christians whose faithfulness has deepened my own.

and it also feels like the beginning of something. a faith that more queer and straight christians will discover celibacy as a beautiful, fruitful vocation in the kingdom of God.

i’m so thankful for @sanctuaryri - a church willing to become family in more than name. willing to listen and learn and hold conviction + tenderness together, and say to hannah with our lives:

you belong to us,
and we belong to you.

marriage tells the truth about the kingdom by pointing us toward christ and his bride…

but celibacy also tells the truth about the kingdom. it points toward the resurrection. toward the day Jesus says is coming when marriage itself will give way to something even greater: the communion of God and his people.

@ofwonderandwhimsy93 , may your life keep reminding all of us that Jesus is worthy of a whole life.

Almost 3 years ago I was consecrated to a vow of celibacy, out of love for Jesus. I preached at @sanctuaryri back in the early 2020s, and a dear congregation member @ofwonderandwhimsy93 was in attendance. She felt a similar call in her own journey and sent me these wonderfully holy photos. Such a joy to see the Bride arise in this way, all over the world, in a church that either sees celibacy as repression or marriage as saviour, rather than a simple act of Christlikeness, receiving a name better than sons and daughters, and bringing Heaven to Earth. Congratulations, Hannah and such kudos to @sanctuaryri @andrewmook for carrying the seeds forward that the Lord planted! #joy #holiness #beauty #awarofloves #jesus taken in Sanctuary Church by @sanctuaryri

This past weekend our teams gathered for Team Conf to eat, worship, pray, and hear what God has been doing in our church. And we heard it. Story after story of His faithfulness, the kind that had the whole room in tears.
