I don’t know if I’m more self conscious than the average man, but it feels impossible to describe a piece I make with feeling like a pretentious a-hole. I have to explain what I was attempting to convey, colors, symbolism and the feelings they are intended to provoke, and I’m just not good at explaining all of that in a way that doesn’t make me feel like I’m coming across pompous.

But with the art I like I always feel closer to it after getting in the artist’s head for a little bit so I’ll try to keep it brief and simple.

The feeling I was trying to catch was the way life can toss and turn us like getting caught up in a riptide sometimes. Yet after those “riptide” moments you can turn back and see that those moments became building blocks of who you are and that love and grace and help guided you through and pulled you out the other side.

I had been working on this piece for a few weeks, and last week I was talking to some friends about this topic at a bar and I cried and then I got self conscious again. I told you, it’s a problem for me.

It’s inspired by a combination of Japanese and Danish art, mostly from the late 1800s.

Anyways it’s now available on our store if any of that speaks to you in any way or if you just like the colors.

I am so pumped. After a lot of work from a lot of us on the Sandgrain side, we are finally launching canvas art. We have had so many requests for this and have finally gotten this project over the finish line. Check out the canvas collection. We also have a few new pieces that have been added in the last month and we are going to keep adding to this collection. Sunflower Harvest ( picture 3) is my current favorite.

I’ve been working on a few different pieces this summer. This first one is a bit of a continuation or spiritual successor of ‘Escalones’. But the other 3 are a bit of a layering exploration that was really fun to do. With those it’s always hard to know when you’re ‘done’. There’s certainly a lot of places you can stop but then you add one more thing and it snowballs.

Also the @kevinmorby album is the best album of the year so far and essential listening.
