Ironically, we were married on 1 OCT, Nigeria Independence Day. My wife bought me this incredibly cool anniversary gift because having spent the last 20 years working with Nigerian, it’s part of my fabric. Nigeria’s most iconically cool artist, Fela Kuti was born 15 OCT and this marks the annual Felabration week. Did you know: Johannesburg turns 140 today? 🎂🇿🇦 The city was founded on gold, hence its moniker, EGOLI - City of Gold. It was today, on 4 October 1886 that Randjeslaagte (the spot I’m standing on in this pic) was officially proclaimed open for public gold diggings. 🎬 WERKMODE is always unearthing stories and locations for film producers. Our cultural and historic sights are an open-air museum, like this magnificent Unit Rig Mark 36 haul 120 tonne truck which, relocated from the Sishen Mine in the Northern Cape, to Ferreira’s Dorp JHB - the site of the very first gold diggings. Africa Day | Interesting fact: We filmed this shot for the 'Destinations Africa' travel show, 11 years ago, on the lip of the Victoria Falls at the Devil’s Pool. Some fun facts: Vic falls has daytime and lunar rainbows, upside-down rain caused by the spray of the falls, it's shared by two countries, it's a @UUNESCO and one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the world, and its original name, Mosi-oa-Tunya means 'the smoke that thunders' - and you'll see why. For Producers 🎬 The Vic Falls are seasonal. The Devils Pool is only accessible during the dry season (Sep-Dec), so timing is essential, not to mention H&S protocols. The visuals are dramatic and simply stunning. Africa Day | Interesting fact: Africa is home to roughly 3 000 cultures, and here's one you may not have heard of. We were in the Damaraland on a small shoot when a man greeted us and said "Ek - is a Afrikaaner." Instantly intrigued, we learned of the Riemvasmaak people for the first time. Africa's history is one of resilience, colonialism, forced displacement and triumph among many other things. The Rimvasmaakers were exiled to Namibia from the Northern Cape during SA's apartheid years and were given land by Damara Chief Justus ǁGaroëb. They are known for being South Africa’s first successful post-apartheid land restitution people. They have a profound connection to their ancestral desert land. Ceremonially, they wear Red for the blood of ancestors, black for the tears shed during the forced displacement, and white for peace.
