Being half Chinese has always been a funny thing to explain.

Growing up in Canada, especially as a teenager, people could usually tell I was mixed, but almost no one ever guessed Chinese.

“You look more Indigenous.” “I would’ve guessed Japanese.” “You’re tall for a Chinese girl.”
Just a few of the comments I got used to hearing over the years.

My dad was Chinese, born and raised in China. Yet whenever I’m there, no one believes me when I say I’m half Chinese. My favorite? At restaurants, they’ll sometimes bring me a fork before I’ve even ordered.

When I was younger, feeling caught somewhere between two worlds wasn’t always easy. Now, I embrace it. It’s part of my story and a part of who I am that I’m proud of.

Half Chinese. Canadian born. Apparently still giving “needs a fork” in China.

En grandissant au Canada, surtout à l’adolescence, les gens voyaient souvent que j’étais mixée, mais presque personne ne devinait que j’étais moitié chinoise.

« Tu ressembles plus à une Autochtone. » « J’aurais plutôt pensé que tu étais Japonaise. » « Tu es grande pour une Chinoise. »
Juste quelques exemples de commentaires que je me suis habituée à entendre au fil des années.

Mon père était chinois, né et élevé en Chine. Pourtant, quand j’y vais, personne ne me croit vraiment quand je dis que je suis moitié chinoise. Mon préféré? Au resto, on m’apporte parfois une fourchette avant même que j’aie commandé.

Plus jeune, avoir l’impression d’être un peu entre deux mondes n’était pas toujours facile. Aujourd’hui, je l’assume pleinement. Ça fait partie de mon histoire et c’est une partie de moi dont je suis fière.

Moitié chinoise. Née au Canada. Mais apparemment, en Chine, j’ai toujours l’air d’avoir besoin d’une fourchette.

Trouver une activité qui plaît à mes trois garçons en même temps? Ce n'est pas toujours évident.
