This is how our presentation at @fabricateconference 2024 was celebrated by @sandycurth 🙌🏽🦾

Today at SwapFest (an electronics flea market in one of MIT’s parking garages) I realized it had been almost exactly 10 years since I first visited MIT for this same event. In 2013 my computer science professor got us up at 5am on a Saturday to drive the 3.5 hours to Boston for the April Swapfest, promising we’d find whatever we were missing in life. He wasn’t wrong, that first trip I picked up 3, 10mm stainless steel idler pulleys for 50 cents each, the last missing components of Harald, my first home made ceramic 3D printer. This morning I found some beautiful marine grade cable glands and exactly the 500ml pycnometer I’ve been looking for. 🤖 #nerdsinthewild taken in MIT Flea Market / Swapfest by @sandycurth

My contribution to the @suenoscon_cdmx was the development of a fabrication method for the bovedillas or “tile arches” that span between the shape optimized beams used in the @digitalstructuresmit low carbon housing construction system. These blocks are 3d printed in a mixture of local clays from Oaxaca and Zacatecas by my dear friend and collaborator @dinorahmschulte, and her team @aleidamerkel. This structural clay was formulated with @anforastudio @anforastudio a Mexican ceramics producer with a long and storied history. With their help we were able to mass produce mass customized bovedillas to minimize the material needed to make formwork in a one way floor system using typical material processing and firing methods.

Combined with @moh.isms #edugascón @kiley_fi @digitalstructuresmit many years of work on shape optimized beams (the beautiful precast concrete elements in the photos) and material life cycle modeling we created a floor system with 50% less embodied carbon than its conventional equivalent.

Dreams of Fiber/Timber, Earth/Concrete is a participatory, architectural installation that unfolds stories about Mexico City through four materials, their provenance, and their promise for the future. Through its critical adaptation of traditional papercraft, creative reuse of recycled wood from la Feria montaña rusa, and innovative use of earth and concrete, this site-responsive installation invites us to recognize the palimpsest of Mexico City’s histories and imagine new possibilities.

Sueños con Fibra/Madera, Tierra/Concreto es una instalación arquitectónica participativa, Sueños de Fibra/Madera, Tierra/Concreto despliega historias sobre la Ciudad de México a través de cuatro materiales, su procedencia y su promesa para el futuro. A través de la adaptación crítica del papel tradicional, la reutilización creativa de la madera reciclada y el uso innovador de tierra y concreto, esta instalación nos invita a reconocer el palimpsesto de las historias urbanas e imaginar nuevas posibilidades al exhortar al público a compartir sus sueños para la Ciudad de México.

@suenoscon_cdmx under construction earlier today. Bricks 3D printed from local materials in CDMX make up the formwork for a floor slab optimized to reduce embodied carbon by 50%. A massive collaboration with many amazing team members which I will try to highlight throughout the week. Excited to share more details soon. Check out the opening tomorrow in the Alameda if you are in CDMX tomorrow!
